Road Trip!


Prepare Your car:

Check and adjust if needed:

  • Coolant and oil
  • Tire pressure & spare tire
  • Brakes, belts, caps, Hoses and filters
  • Lights and signals
  • Wiper blades and fluid

Kids Outdoor Safety Corner


Bicycling

  • Is bike in working order?
  • Wear a well-fitted helmet.
  • Be seen - use reflectors, neon clothing, or ride in the day.
  • Watch for opening car doors, low branches and other hazards.
  • Follow the rules of the road.

Playgrounds

  • Is ground cushioned with mulch, rubber or other appropriate material?  
  • Avoid strangulation hazards like clothing with drawstrings, necklaces, etc. 
  • Remove bike helmets when on playground.
  • Never attach jump ropes, clotheslines or pet leashes to play equipment.
  • Limit sun exposure, especially between 10am and 2pm.
  • Know signs of heat illnesses.


Skateboarding

  • Check equipment for loose, cracked or broken parts.
  • Wear safety gear: proper fitting helmet, closed shoes, goggles, elbow & knee pads.
  • Learn to fall safely on the fleshy part of body.


With any outdoor activity, be sure to have drinking water on hand!

Camping Safety



  • Know the weather. Stay informed with a weather radio. Download a Weather App.
  • See the camping safety brochure.
  • Bring a first aid kit.
  • Bring emergency supplies: flashlight, map, compass, knife, insect repellent, meds, etc.
  • Pack and store food safely and away from wildlife.
  • Be aware of poisonous plants
  • Know when and where campfires are allowed. 
  • Never leave a fire unattended.

Beat the Heat


  • Limit outdoor activities. Stick to early morning or evening.
  • Drink plenty of water.
  • Don't drink ice cold water when overheated, it can make you sick.
  • Don't drink caffeine or alcoholic beverages.
  • Wear light clothing.
  • Wear sunscreen.
  • Don't leave children or pets in a hot car.
  • Monitor high risk. persons: infants, seniors, & those with medical conditions.
  • Know the signs for heat-related illness.
