Thrive South Nashville’s Busy Season of Joyful Activities!

This summer, Thrive South Nashville was abuzz with a whirlwind of exciting events and activities! From our Boys Retreat at the end of May to our thrilling trip to the Civil Rights Museum, we packed the season with unforgettable moments. Highlights included our Chicken Run in June, a beach camp adventure, and a heartwarming baby shower. We enjoyed a lively 4th of July Pool Party, invigorating hikes at Radnor, and cherished time at a birthday party with friends. Our summer also featured sewing classes, fishing trips, a wedding, and a youth excursion to the TN State Fair! Plus, we prepped for the new school year with back-to-school shopping and we are kicking off the Thrive Beyond Afterschool program. What a summer to remember!

Volunteer Opportunity: Become a Mentor with Thrive's New Afterschool Program at McMurray Middle School!

Thrive South Nashville is excited to launch the Thrive Beyond Mentorship Program, starting September 9th at McMurray Middle School! Every Monday from 4:00 to 5:30 p.m., we will be offering a dynamic afterschool program designed to support and empower refugee and immigrant students.

We’re so excited to offer this to the many refugee and immigrant middle schoolers at McMurray but we need help. We're looking for volunteers to serve as mentors. Your role will involve providing academic support, life skills coaching, and guidance on future aspirations. Mentors will help students navigate key workshops on financial literacy, communication, and problem-solving, and also assist with practical life skills like home economics and managing bills.

In addition, we offer a "Lunch Buddies" program where mentors join students during their lunch break, creating a familiar and supportive presence on campus. We are also planning a fall retreat to Fall Creek Falls State Park in November!

Boys Retreat

At the end of May we took 11 middle school and high school boys to Rebekah Pope's farm for 3 days to swim, hike, fish, and be boys!

Beach Camp and Chicken Run

3 of our kids received scholarships to attend Brentwood Baptist's Beach Camp. It was their first time ever going to the beach and seeing the ocean!

A Beautiful Baby Shower and Sewing Class

That's right its TWINS. Our dear lovely friend Za had not one, but two babies this summer. Born at 7 months, Mina and Zoey are quite possibly the cutest things you've ever seen (just like their mom). Thank you to our wonderful friends at Church of the City for hosting a very special baby shower.

Sew Much Fun

Our sewing class with the girls has been a “seamlessly” fantastic experience! They’ve been threading their way through new skills, from basic stitches to crafting their own unique designs. It’s been a “sew” rewarding journey, with plenty of laughter and creativity woven into every session. These girls are truly “sewing” up a storm and we couldn’t be prouder of their “sew” impressive progress!

Fireworks and Wedding Cake

For the 4th we had an epic pool party at Ms Kori's house and then got to watch the Brentwood fireworks!

We were so excited to celebrate Paw Eh Hser and Pe Ne's wedding this summer. Paw Hser has been one of the most valuable assets to us and the Karen community for years. She interprets for us, for the schools, and is the emergency contact for pretty much every Karen kid in South Nashville! We love you Paw Hser and are so happy for you!

Fishing and Hiking

Why don't fish play basketball? Cause they're afraid of the net! Thanks to your financial support we were able to purchase fishing poles so that we can take the boys fishing this year. Let's just say the only not so a-luring part of this was when Eh Soe kissed a fish....yuck

What better way to do bible study than on top of the mountain at Radnor Lake?

Back to School Shopping and Funnel Cake

Thank you so much to those of you that donated money for gift cards for back to school shopping. We were able to take 17 kids for back to school shopping! We had generous donations for backpacks and school supplies because of Thrive sponsors like you!

Apart from the activities sponsored by thrive, we also love just hanging out with our families, especially the youth. We got together with some of the youth and young adults and went to the TN State Fair. This was the first time any of the had been to anything like this.
