I’m a firm believer that you should never apologize for your reading tastes. While I am a somewhat eclectic reader, I am also an unapologetic fan of romance and not-too-scary suspense novels; books often considered guilty pleasures. This fall I look forward to stretching out of my comfort zone with the library’s newest book discussion group: New Perspectives.
New Perspectives will launch this August, with support from The Findlay-Hancock County Community Foundation. Each month’s book will encourage readers to look at a different topic in a new light. Discussions will be co-hosted by a community member with particular experience or expertise in that topic.
Generally, I dread reading something “because I have to.” However, inspired by the coming discussion, and extra copies made available by Overdrive on the Ohio Digital Library, I listened to The New Jim Crow by Michelle Alexander. I can’t wait to hear the discussion of this thought-provoking work.
I’m still eagerly looking forward to the next titles by all of my favorite authors. Now I’m looking forward to gaining some New Perspectives with my future reading as well.
