Happy summer!

Here at the Summer Fund, a new employee and a new summer calls for a new newsletter! As we look to support more partners than ever before, we've brought on an additional team member to help expand our capacity for vital philanthropic work. Hear from each of our employees below before learning a bit more about the great things our partners are already getting done this summer season. Happy reading!

A Word from our Director

Ah yes, summer in the city.

Among the sights: young people dawning bright tee shirts boarding a Red Line train at Fields Corner, soccer balls soaring through the air in East Boston, paint drying on a fresh mural in Cambridge.

Among the sounds: the crack of a baseball bat in Charlestown, a “set, hut” echoing through a Hyde Park football field, a printer rifling off hundreds of copies of the latest edition of a youth-led newspaper.

Among the smells: wildflowers blooming in Mattapan, freshly cut spruce in the woodworking shop in Mission Hill, Halal food being prepared in Jamaica Plain.

Among the sensations: hope, excitement, inspiration, joy.

All too often, the narrative around summer in Greater Boston focuses on challenges and deficits. Schools, violence, housing. While these challenges are real, there are also many triumphs to celebrate: A teenager finding a mentor at their local community center, a young woman experiencing the power of her voice while advocating for pay equity at the state house, a 9-year-old discovering their love for the violin. Through this newsletter, we hope to elevate and celebrate these daily triumphs and bring attention to the incredible work of our nonprofit partners.

For years now, I have been inspired by the organizations, programs, and people I have had the pleasure to work alongside as Director of the Summer Fund. I, along with my new colleague, Jaidyn, look forward to continuing to learn from each and every one of you this summer, and we hope that this newsletter will help bring some much-needed attention to the small victories that occur every day in your programs.

Meet the Summer Fund's Newest Employee!

Hello, my name is Jaidyn Appel, and I am delighted to be joining the Summer Fund team full-time as the new Programs and Communications Associate!

I graduated from Tufts University with a B. A. in Political Science in May of 2023.

Seeking an opportunity to combine my interest in the world of nonprofits with my passion for writing and sharing compelling narratives, this communications-based role at the Summer Fund was a natural fit.

I sincerely look forward to helping expand the Summer Fund's capacity in the coming years, and to sharing the wonderful work you are doing with other partner organizations and our funders alike. Though you will be hearing from me somewhat regularly (and hopefully seeing me in person at a site visit), please do not hesitate to reach out and find a time to connect. I can be reached by email, or by calling 617-426-2606 (ext. 141).

Growth and Inspiration

Summer Fund staff visited Girlstart, whose Dorchester site grew from 7 campers in 2022 to 26 in 2023. Girlstart campers each spent a week learning about technology and careers in STEM.

Howdy, Partner!

The Summer Fund is ecstatic to welcome 12 new organizations into our portfolio in 2023, bringing the total number of nonprofits we work with to 59.

Exclusive Access

This year, more of the journalists in WriteBoston's Teens in Print program gained official press access to the Boston Calling music festival than ever before. The writers used their access to go backstage and interview artists!

Picture yourself here . . .

In the midst of the summer season more than any other time of year, we are here to connect you and your organization to other groups doing and showcasing great work in the Greater Boston area.

If you have upcoming showcases, concerts, or events of any kind you're looking to publicize, drop us a line to be featured in the next edition of our newsletter! So far this summer, we've gotten to explore Girlstart's program showcase, profile week at WriteBoston, self-defense courses at Level Ground, and the Science Club for Girl's rocket launch (to name a few): Let your program's event be next!

A few quick notes:

Our goal is to make these newsletters as useful and effective as possible. We would love to hear what kinds of information you and your organization would find most helpful. Do you want advice from fellow partners on how their programs are being staffed and run? A calendar of upcoming Summer Fund events? Something else entirely? These newsletters exist for you, which is why your getting in touch to explain what you want to see is incredibly valuable for us.

We want to make sure these updates are going to the right place. If you are receiving this newsletter, that means you filled out either our Letter of Intent, Application, or Homeless Campership Fund request form. That being said, if there are are other people at your organization who should be getting our newsletters instead of (or in addition to) you, send an email to let us know.
