Jaidyn's Report: First Month at the Summer Fund

When I was growing up, field trips were always my favorite part of school. Getting the chance to do something out of the ordinary brought some much-needed adventure to the seemingly endless and identical school days.

I never intended to look for a job that allowed me to continue going on field trips, but I couldn't be happier to have found one. Exploring the the work our partners are doing all around the city headlines every one of my weeks, and I always leave feeling inspired and reminded of the meaning behind the work we do at the Summer Fund.

To everyone I have met on a visit so far, thank you for opening your doors (and fields and gyms and labs) and allowing us to see the programs you manage and serve, and the children whose summer days you continuously brighten. And to everyone I have yet to meet, I hope to see you on a field trip soon!

As always, you can reach me by email or at 617-426-2606 (ext. 141) to discuss what you want out of our newsletters, advertise upcoming events, and update us on any parts of your programs that you would like to share.

Fun in the Sun

We were taken on an adventure, visiting a few of the Phillips Brooks House Association's ten Summer Urban Program sites!

Discovering the City

We followed along as the Boston Explorers prepared to take on their field trips (on the T, of course)!

Lights, Camera, Action!

We made a visit to one of our new partners, Fresh Films, whose program exposes teens to employment opportunities in the filmmaking industry!

What you've done . . .

Our partners have taken the summer by storm, making big developments we're excited to share:

  • Camp Shriver at UMass Boston was featured in a recently published book, Best Practices for Inclusive Camps, designed to guide camp leaders in tailoring programming for youth with disabilities. Approximately half of Camp Shriver's 150 campers have intellectual and/or developmental disabilities.
  • NXT Era Panthers Youth Flag Football Program Director Mick Brunache put together an inspiring documentary about how the program inspires community and hard work. Take it from us - it's worth the watch!

Reminder: August Adventures Returns!

We've said it before, but it probably bears repeating: register for August Adventures! The Highland Street Foundation's August Adventures program offers a different (completely free) event every day in August. Bring your campers to learn about revolutionary history, see a performance, or visit Mass Audubon. Whatever you do, act fast, because events are already filling up! Check out the full calendar and register for every event at the links to the left.

You could be next!

A few quick notes:

Our goal is to make these newsletters as useful and effective as possible. We would love to hear what kinds of information you and your organization would find most helpful. Do you want advice from fellow partners on how their programs are being staffed and run? A calendar of upcoming Summer Fund events? Something else entirely? These newsletters exist for you, which is why your getting in touch to explain what you want to see is incredibly valuable for us.

We want to make sure these updates are going to the right place. If you are receiving this newsletter, that means you filled out either our Letter of Intent, Application, or Homeless Campership Fund request form. That being said, if there are are other people at your organization who should be getting our newsletters instead of (or in addition to) you, send an email to let us know.
