Can you believe Art with a Heart in Healthcare (AWAHIH) is going on our eleventh year of partnership with MOCA Jacksonville?
This year's patient art exhibition, “Behind the Mask”, uses technology as a form of artistic expression and communication and draws upon inspiration from American pop artist, Roy Lichtenstein.
Working together with AWAHIH Artists-in-Residence, patients of Wolfson Children's Hospital (WCH) create self-portraits on tablets behind a uniquely designed face mask while answering the question, "What are you thinking behind your mask?"
The prompt inspired participants to be introspective and creative while elevating self-expression, self-confidence, and self-awareness during their hospital experience.
Be sure to mark your calendars for the exhibition opening taking place on September 12, 2021, at 2 pm EST.
You won't want to miss it!

The Wolfson Children's Hospital (WCH) playrooms are back in business!
One at a time, patients can now have art sessions with AWAHIH in their hospital floor’s playroom for a chance to get out of their rooms and have art-filled fun.
Some of the patients that join us to make art in the play room have been hospitalized for weeks or months, and is the first time they have been able to leave their rooms. This helps to lift their sprits and gives them a chance to just be a kid.
Camilla (left) loves spending as much time as possible with AWAHIH Artists-in-Residence and experimenting with several different art materials! Carson (right) loved painting a toy car, sculpting model magic, and then playing with some of the playroom toys afterwards.
Thank you to WCH Child Life Specialists for referring patients to us and helping to coordinate art sessions in the playrooms!

AWAHIH kicked off Nurses Week 2021 by decorating the windows at the temporary entrance of WCH with artwork and inspirational phrases to show our appreciation for the hardworking nurses of Baptist Medical Center Jacksonville (BMCJ) and WCH.
We are so grateful for our healthcare heroes!

AWAHIH artists, in partnership with Nemours Children’s Specialty Care Clinic of Jacksonville, have created paintings for the Pulmonology/Allergy Clinic on the 8th floor of the Nemours building. These paintings for patients, their families, and the staff of Nemours highlight the flora and fauna in the local environment and ecosystems of the St. Johns River, which can be seen from the windows of the unit.
AWAHIH Artists-in-Residence and volunteers Dylan Bauer, Teresa Graham, Lisa Miyares, Brooke McKinney, Matt Richards, and Jill Swanson created more than 20 paintings for the project to be hung in exam rooms, treatment/ triage areas, and hallways in Pulmonology/Allergy unit.
A description (in English and Spanish) of the plant or animal in the painting is displayed next to each work of art. Corresponding coloring pages created for each work of art are provided for patients to color on, either during their wait at the clinic or at home. This project aligns with AWAHIH’s mission of enhancing the healing process for patients and their families through a fine art experience.
AWAHIH would like to thank Nemours for their ongoing support and for funding this project that patients and their families can enjoy for years to come!
Also, a big thank you to our board member, Laird, for taking professional photographs of the artwork.

AWAHIH was honored to lead families who have lost a child to pediatric cancer through an art session in partnership wtih Tom Coughlin Jay Fund at their annual Remembrance Weekend for the 6th year in a row.
For this year's project, AWAHIH Artists-in-Residence, volunteer artists, and participating families painted river rocks and flower pots to go along with the weekend theme of “growing through grief”.
Participants expressed how much they enjoyed the session and how relaxed they felt while making art together.
Thank you to our volunteers and the Tom Coughlin Jay Fund for their time and efforts put forth to make this event a huge success!
Thank you to Laird for photographing the event.

In our ongoing partnership with Tom Coughlin Jay Fund, AWAHIH also provided pottery painting art sessions with WCH oncology patients.
The finished painted pottery pieces were a special addition to the Tom Coughlin Jay Fund's 26th annual Celebrity Golf Classic silent auction items that benefitted families with children battling cancer.
