HoopHers Camden: Empowering Young Women to Become Confident Student Athletes
This summer, CHAA was proud to introduce a new six-week girls basketball enrichment program, HoopHers Camden, for Camden girls ages 9-14. CHAA partnered with the Sixers Youth Foundation and Philadelphia Youth Basketball to offer this free program, combining competitive game play with leadership and personal development.

A core initiative of HoopHers is “A Women’s Word,” featuring female mentors of diverse backgrounds, careers, ages and cultures to engage and empower the girls to succeed. “A Women’s Word” provides a safe space to address the opportunities and challenges that female student athletes face, such as health, nutrition, self-esteem, stress management, and tools for academic success. This summer’s speakers included: Katrina McCombs , Superintendent, Camden City School District; Sheila Davis , Councilwoman, City of Camden and former Camden High basketball player; Nailah Wallace , Federal Law Enforcement Officer; Shanyse Kae , Licensed Cosmetologist and Business Owner; Hilary Beard , Award-Winning Writer, Public Speaker, Trainer and Personal Development Coach.

Special guest Valerie Still , WNBA Hall of Famer and former Camden High basketball star, was the featured speaker at the HoopHers closing ceremony held on Wednesday, Aug. 14 at the Rutgers-Camden Gymnasium . Still energized the young athletes with an inspiring speech followed by a basketball clinic with the Sixers. The event also featured a performance by the 76ers Dunk Squad.

“CHAA was thrilled to expand our summer programming to include a basketball program just for girls,” said Al Dyer, Athletic Executive Director of CHAA. “Led by strong female coaches and mentors, HoopHers empowered our players on and off the court.”

CHAA's Football Skills & Drills Clinic was JAWSome!
On July 26, CHAA teamed up with Jaws Youth Playbook to host a free Football Skills & Drills clinic for Camden youth. Over 80 children between the ages of 5-16 participated in a series of drills to enhance the skills of passing, catching and running in a non-contact setting.

Ron Jaworski, former Philadelphia Eagles Quarterback and member of the CHAA Board of Trustees, spoke to the children about the importance of having fun and always taking advantage of opportunities to get active.
Special thanks to volunteers and local coaches from Camden Bulldogs, Camden Raiders, Centerville Simbas, Staley Park and Whitman Park Football.
