SUMMER LEARNING ARTIST MAYA GONZALEZ
Last week, our Summer Learning Challenge artist Maya Gonzalez and her family visited the children's staff at the Downtown Library and attended a live performance at the Magical Bridge Playground. Maya was delighted to see firsthand how her artwork is helping children feel inspired to read.

Maya is an award-winning children's book artist, author, and activist. She lives and works in San Francisco. You can find her books at the Library!

NATIONAL DISABILITY INDEPENDENCE DAY
This week, we are celebrating National Disability Independence Day, a day that commemorates the signing of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) into law in 1990.

Check out inclusive books such as Aneta Cruz’s “Juan Has the Jitters.” Juan has autism and is anxious about his school’s upcoming athletic games. Rather than let his nervousness stop him, Juan practices strategies to calm himself and enjoys participating as a judge. You can read more books like this for kids from our booklist here.
FIXIT CLINIC IN THE NEWS
The Fixit Clinic and the newly installed bicycle repair stations at the Downtown Library and Redwood Shores Branch Library were featured in The San Mateo Daily Journal on July 20.

The article discusses the library's effort to bring new life to old items and to build a sense of community through repair. Learn more
