Area26 news & updates

Summer 2023 | Issue 37
Let me win, but if I cannot win,
Let me be brave in the attempt.
With the arrival of summer, it's time to look back on the exciting Spring/Summer games that took place. From thrilling matches to memorable moments, this season had it all. Our latest issue will cover all the highlights and give you an inside look at the season's activities. Join us as we relive the excitement and celebrate the athletes who made this season unforgettable.

Also, look for the upcoming opportunities to support our fundraisers (tee times or plane towing anyone?). The Golf Fundraiser has its web "doors" open to register and donate - the article is in this issue. Watch for our Area’s Plane Pull page coming soon…feel free to contact me with questions.

We have photo inputs from many sources, and have included what we received...if you don't see your team but would like to, please submit photos in the future!

Since the return from the pandemic, there have been a number of issues and challenges to process of maintaining our sports numbers. These include volunteers who moved away or left for health reasons, competition with other programs for facilities, reduced contributions affecting the budget, the roster limitations, and capacity at practices, meets and tournaments.

These in aggregate have all affected our ability to add new teams or sports to our program. If you have ideas or suggestions on how to mitigate any of these challenges, we invite you to contact the Council Chair at [email protected].

State Summer Games
Athletes from Area 26 put up a tremendous performance in the SOVA Summer Games held from June 9 to 11 in and around the University of Richmond.

Our team competed in various events including Swim, Track and Field, Softball, and Tennis, showcasing their incredible skills and dedication. We're proud to report that our athletes gave their all and achieved great success, earning numerous medals and bringing home memories that will last a lifetime.

The opening day was a disappointment for all, as both outdoor competition and much of the opening ceremonies (including the super-special Last Mile Torch Run), were cancelled due to the smoke from the Canadian Wildfires blanketing the Eastern US. Thankfully, Saturday saw a clear-up, and all events including the DJ/Dance on the U of Richmond football field went off smoothly.

Congratulations to our athletes for their outstanding performance and thank you to everyone who supported them throughout their journey. We can't wait to see what they accomplish next! Here are photos and other details from the Champs...
Opening Ceremonies

The Opener was moved indoors to the Robbins Center, and was limited to acknowledging the support of all of our wonderful sponsors. (photos from multiple sources...)

One highlight, though...the Ceremonies opened with our own Jay Choi playing the National Anthem on his violin! Way to go Jay!

Track and Field

60 Athletes from Area 26 ran/threw/jumped their hearts out in Saturdays compressed event. Highlights are below.

The Good News Bears in Richmond
(Story and photo by Linda Armistead)

The Bears’ softball team also ventured to Richmond for the Summer Games.   With softball was cancelled on Friday June 9th, due to air quality concerns, the Bears stayed busy celebrating David Moananu’s Birthday before then being lead on a campus tour and stadium run led by Chris Hilliard.

On Saturday the Bears play 2 games. Both games were equally matched with one run deciding the difference in both games.   Game one was against the Highlanders’ Coach Pitch team.  Offensively, the game was back and forth game between the Bears and the Highlander’s.  A late inning rally with hits from coach Jeff Orazi, Chris Hilliard, Amy Luckett, Aquina Rivera (who came out softball retirement for the Summer Games), and David Moananu gave the Bears the win with a score of 5 to 4.
In the second game, the Bears play Area 26 Lion’s Pride.  The Bears got out to a quick start with a lead-off home run by David Moananu, followed by hits by Ed Brandmark, Aileen Rivera, Ed Oppler and Jason Dermarest.  Despite good defense from the Bears to include put outs by David Moananu at first base and Jason Dermarest at third, Lion Pride hitting gave them the win by a score of 4 to 5.

Our athletes brought home multiple awards: Jay Choi (singles and doubles- silver), Michael Lozos (singles-bronze, doubles-silver), Jin-Ho Chang (singles-silver), Oliver Young (singles-ribbon), Eliza Moore (skills-silver) and Jaden Joo (skills-gold)! We're so proud of our athletes and all their accomplishments!

Our season wrapped up in May. We had 35 athletes and 20 volunteers! Thanks again to our athletes, their families, coaches and volunteers for such a fun and successful season!

In Memoriam: Mark Jeffrey Emery

Area 26 lost a wonderful friend and long-time resource with the passing this spring of Mark Jeffrey Emery.

A note from Veronica Jennings:

Mark Emery, former Area 26 Golf Coordinator, Coach and Unified Partner, passed away on Monday, 4/3 after a 1 ½ year battle with cancer. It was an honor to work alongside Mark for the last 15 years. When we talk about the dedication of our volunteers Mark embodied that to the fullest. He volunteered with Area 26 for 20+ years, because he not only wanted to be a leader in our movement but also wanted to make sure Jeff (his son) had meaningful involvement in the sports he participated in as well.

In 2021 the Emery family moved to GA during the pandemic to be closer to their grandchildren and additional family members but the move didn’t stop Mark’s dedication to volunteering with Area 26. He continued to mentor his mentee, Robin Utz who took over leadership of the golf program and he also continued to be an active committee member in raising funds for their annual golf tournament fundraiser which he chaired for over 13 years.

The annual Area 26 Golf Tournament Fundraiser is being re-designated as the Mark J Emery Memorial Golf Tournament in his honor. At the time of his passing, his family requested that in lieu of flowers that donations be made to the Area 26 SO program. We are grateful to his family for their generosity.

Hail and Farewell
Departing Coach and Friend

After a many year stint as a volunteer, Coach Richard "Dick" Schneider has decided to make the 2023 Basketball and Softball seasons his last with Area 26. Dick came to Special Olympics with his son, Richard "Rick" Schneider.

The reason for them leaving is because they are moving to MD to be closer to their children and grandchildren.  His pride the Cannons will miss him hugely, as he was both a mentor and father figure to the team and a cheerful presence at every event he attended. A picture message from the team that knows him best...
And a message from the man himself...
"Thank you for your such thoughtful personal comments. Over the years, I've tried to live up to the Kennedy family spirit that inspired the Special Olympics movement. Along the way, I've had the incredible benefits of knowing many special athletes, coaches, and family members as friends who (through sports participation) have known the joys of "let me win" and the character-building attributes of "if I cannot win, let me be brave in the attempt".
We all are lifetime winners with this personal philosophy.
Special thanks to all the Area 26 staff for dedicating yourselves to providing the Special Olympics sports programs around the calendar that enrich the lives of our special olympians."
- Dick
Three other farewells...and a hail-and-a-half!

The Area Council held its June meeting on the 14th, and selected a new Athlete Representative for the next cycle. Kia Hill will begin her two-year term on the first of July.

With that milestone, we will also be changing two other VERY longstanding Council roles: Bernie Woolfley will be transitioning the Treasurer position to current Councilmember Jeff McGiboney, and Billy Duquette will be giving the Athlete Rep Mentor role to Max Hershberger.

Another big move...long time Senior Director, Potomac Region Veronica Jennings has just been promoted (effective July 1st...) as the Assistant Vice President, Local Services for SOVA!! She will be continuing to support in her old role until a formal decision is made on a replacement. Look for a blast with that news when it occurs.

Note: Bernie’s former company Navigent, and now his current company Ankura sponsor an Area 26 soccer tournament each season. He will also continue to organize the Marymount Invitational Basketball Tournament!

We want to thank both Bernie and Billy for their MANY years of service to the Area and the Council, to welcome Kia as she joins the team and congratulate Veronica on her ascension!

As to Veronica, we thank her for her great service in her current role, and look forward to continuing to collaborate with her from her new position. CONGRATS!!

At the same event, Virginia Beach Coordinator Marcus Leggett was also recognized as Area Volunteer of the Year! Marcus is a long time friend of Area 26, helping our athletes at Fall Games and in the Football program on numerous occasions.

THANK YOU MARCUS!!

Coaches/Volunteers of the Quarter
  • by Billy Duquette

Editor's note: this will be Billy's final issue in this column He is moving on to a job as the Secretary for the SOVA Young Professionals Group. Best of luck Billy!!
Gail Whalen and Sandy Schwartz

Gail and Sandy are head coaches, Unified partners, volunteers, and mentors. They both are head coaches for the Lions Pride softball team and also as unified partners on the team as well. Both Sandy and Gail were coaches for the United Blue soccer team. They are unified partners for the Area 26 golf program, and they are Global mentors to Area 26 Global Messenger Ashley Counts.

They got involved in Special Olympics back in 1991 to help out as volunteers to help in their community. A friend of there’s who played in the adult softball, suggested that they would like to watch a softball game from Special Olympics. They were impressed of the joy, the enthusiasm, the chondrodite of team work and play from the athlete’s competition. They became volunteers and never look back. Sandy’s and Gail’s favorite moment was back in June of 2019, their softball team got to say the athlete oath at Summer Games down in Richmond. They both selected Paul Owens, their longest participating member of the team to delver the oath with another Special Olympic athlete from Southern Virginia, while the rest of the softball team stood in front of podium. Then they ask the mother of a different athlete to lead into the oath as a volunteer to get the audience to get involved with the athlete oath. It was a great feeling to have the fieldhouse of athletes to repeat the oath after us was a great honor to them.

Let Me Win ( Always give your best effort to be your best) But If I Can Not Win (Learn to accept that loss is an opportunity to grow and improve your skills) Let Me Win In The Attempt (Never quit, stay motivated, optimistic, and face any difficulty with confidence) and most importantly, ALWAYS HAVE FUN.
