Legislative Report
by Eric Prutsman, Esq. flag-stripes.jpg
It's all about the November elections right now. Every house and senate seat in the Florida Legislature is up for election this year, so incumbent legislators who picked up opponents at qualifying last month are busy walking neighborhoods, waving signs at intersections, and appearing at public events. The House of Representatives, that has a Republican majority with 81 Republicans in the 120 seats, is not likely to see much change in the distribution of R's & D's. The House may lose a seat or two in November to the Democrats but will still be overwhelmingly Republican. The Senate, with a 26 - 14 split in favor of the Republicans, is more likely to see change of 2 or 3 seats picked up by the Democrats. However, not enough seats will change parties to impact the Senate Republican majority.

Once the November 8th general election dust settles, all legislators will head to Tallahassee on November 22nd for an organizational session to convene the 2016-2017 Legislature and officially recognize the new Senate President, Joe Negron (R -Palm City), and new Speaker of the House, Richard Corcoran (R- Lutz). The organizational session will only last one day but legislators will return after Thanksgiving for December committee meetings in advance of the 2017 Session. We expect to hear bold initiatives from Speaker-designate Corcoran who wants to reform the legislative process and reduce the influence of special interests. Also, Senate President-designate Negron has indicated his interest in enhancing Florida's state university system and making Florida more competitive with other states that want to attract Florida students.

The chairmanships of the House and Senate banking committees, as well as the members of those committees, will be known in December and we'll have a better idea of what to expect for the 2017 Session. We're already hearing that affordability of homeowner's insurance and local impact fees are issues that legislative staff are reviewing, and we know that the Governor is very interested in taking a look at taxes and making changes to lower the tax burden. Additionally, MBA has already been in touch this summer with Office of Financial Regulation and the Chief Financial Officer's staff regarding possible changes to Chapter 494, and issues related to "shadow banking." We look forward to being at the table for negotiations in the coming months on legislation for the 2017 Session, and will let you know of any developments.
MPAC Committee Report
by Richard Peek, CRMS, Committee Chair
First allow me to say thank you for the opportunity to be your 2016 - 2017 MPAC Chair.  Each of us and our member companies has shown that we have an interest in supporting our Association and the industry in which we work.  We have a great opportunity this year to impact our industry and part of that includes our PAC donations. 2015 - 2016 under the guidance of Ben Fant was a record year for PAC donations and the bar has been set for us this year, and I look forward to working with each of you to achieve another record!

For those of you who have already made contributions this year, thank you.  And for those of you who will be making contributions moving forward, please accept my gratitude for your support.

Additionally, if you have not already signed up for the Mortgage Action Alliance (MAA), please take a moment to do so by accessing the following link:
(It's free and you do not have to be a member of the associations)

I can tell you that the information that you will receive will prove to be beneficial at some point down the road, and when we need to come together in a grassroots effort you will be automatically notified.

In addition, the article directly below references a new module that will be extremely helpful during the upcoming months!
MBA's Mortgage Action Alliance
Plus the NEW - Election Module
As reference above the Mortgage Action Alliance is an invaluable tool for you. Please click the link to join, it's free and you do not have to be an association member:

NEW-Election Module
If you haven't seen it already, MBA recently launched the MAA Election Module on their Action Site. This is a great resource for you as state members for all things related to the upcoming elections.

In the module, after selecting your state from the US map, a full breakdown of election information will appear, including:

-The federal candidates (with biographical information) running within your congressional district
-Voter registration deadlines
-Links to find your polling place
-Primary election dates
-And lists of the required items you'll need to cast your ballot.

We believe that decisions are made by those who show up, and hope this easy to use tool will help you and the MAA members better prepare themselves for the upcoming election. The link is below, but don't hesitate to reach out to me with any questions!

Congratulations to Alex Castellanos on being this year's winner of the Brown L Whatley

President's Message
Kevin Strickland, AMP

As I think back at my retail mortgage career over the past 15 years, I continue to be humbled by the educational and leadership experiences this association has afforded me. I proudly work for SunTrust Mortgage as Vice President and Sales Manager in Central Florida. SunTrust's support of my growth with both the MBA of Central Florida Chapter and MBA of Florida is greatly appreciated as a professional. I can honestly say the opportunities and experiences given with every MBA position I have held over my past 12-year involvement with the MBA has helped build both my professional network and a greater in depth understanding of the mortgage business.

Over the past 18 months, I've been involved in MBA Education working to obtain my AMP (Accredited Mortgage Professional) designation. This accomplishment will lead me to a CMB (Certified Mortgage Banker) designation within the next year. The requirements, especially SOMB II and III were priceless in gaining a better understanding of secondary markets and corporate strategies. This was exactly the experience I was seeking and I know we have more folks like me within our organizations that would benefit from these opportunities.  The legislative advocacy experiences at both our state level in Tallahassee and the national level in Washington, DC really gives you a better understanding as to how the "Voice of our Industry" needs to be heard. I request that every member of our association be a part of the Mortgage Action Alliance ( mortgageactionalliance.com ). It's fast, simple and easy to sign up and you do not have to be a member of the MBA national to join either. The effects of our efforts using this means can lend a huge impact to our legislative efforts = an Investment in You!

In September 2016, your MBAF Executive Committee and a number of key participants will be holding a two-day strategic planning meeting. Our goal is to outline where we want to take this association over the next five-years and how we can get there to further expand upon the value we bring to you as a member. An Investment in you!

The theme I've chosen for my Presidency is "Investing in You".

My hope and expectation is that you will look at this great association as an "investment in you."  A high level summary of all the opportunities, experiences, and responsibilities our association provides includes:
  • Local Chapter Meetings and Involvement
  • Advocacy Trips to Tallahassee led by Eric Prutsman
  • Secondary Conferences
  • Conventions
  • Committee Member and Chair positions
  • MBA State & Local Workshops
  • Future Leaders
  • National Advocacy Conference in DC
The MBA of Florida is committed to continuing to bring new industry professionals into our "family" and deliver value to its members. It's your Career and you are our leaders! The MBA of Florida is here and prepared to Invest in You!
Please review our committees (link above.) All committees meet via conference calls. Typically the convention, membership and the secondary conference are the busiest committees but not for the entire year as most committee work is usually about a six-month commitment. We are already beginning the organizational work for the secondary confer ence and membership. Please join us and make some friends and connections and at the same time working to move your association forward.

MBA of Jacksonville Chapter News
by Michelle, Glass, Esq., Chapter President

The MBA of Jacksonville wrapped its Spring quarter up by holding several events focusing on the posture of the real estate market.  Our events continued to be promoted on both the MBA of Jacksonville website, www.MBAofJax.org as well as our Facebook page, www.facebook.com/MBAJAX

Our April event, which was held at Carrabba's Italian Grill on April 19, 2016, focused on the market as a whole.  We hosted Doug Duncan, FNMA's Chief Economist, who shared with the membership not only the overall condition of the real estate market nationwide, but also spoke on some specifics as to the local market as well.  In addition, Doug spoke about affordability being the housing market's top issue.  The event was well attended with over 50 participates in attendance.

Doug Duncan, FNMA Chief Economist, and Sherry Gallitz, President of MBA of Jacksonville

On May 10, 2016, our membership meeting, again held at Carrabba's Italian Grill, hosted James Toro, II, Senior Managing Director and Partner of Capstone Valuation Advisors.  Mr. Toro and his associate spoke about valuations of residential property here in the local Jacksonville market as well as ways that people can quickly increase the value of their home.  These suggestions included adding improvements and upgrades to kitchens, bathrooms as well as outdoor entertainment spaces.  In addition, they spoke about ways realtors can help prove increased market value, such as accepting back-up Purchase and Sale Contracts.

The MBA of Jacksonville began its Summer quarter by holding its Annual Installation event as well as attending the Annual Convention for the MBA of Florida.

The Jacksonville Chapter ended its year with its 2016-2017 Officer and Board Installation & Silent Action on June 7, 2016.  This evening social event was held at Maggiano's Little Italy.  MBA of Florida's incoming President, Kevin Strickland, and MBA of Florida's Legislative Representative, Eric Prutsman, were honored attendees at the event.  Eric provided the group with a short update as upcoming legislative matters that may affect our industry in the upcoming year.  As the incoming President of MBA of Florida, Kevin was asked to do the honor of inducting the new Board.  A silent auction was held to benefit our Chapter's MPAC program where approximately $2,500 was raised.  In addition, our own outgoing President, Sherry Gallitz, was awarded the John A. Gilliland Award by Perry Wilson, last year's recipient, for her extra effort and hard work she bestowed upon our Chapter 2015-2016.

At the Annual MBA of Florida Convention, the MBA of Jacksonville swooped down and grab the MPAC crown from the South Florida Chapter by raising $8,607.56.

On July 20, 2016, the Jacksonville Chapter held its planning meeting for the upcoming year.  We focused on completing a majority of the event calendar as well as planning our membership drive, which is set for August 23, 2016.  This will be an evening social event that prospective new members will be invited to come interact with current members and learn about the benefits of joining the local MBA

 as the new Chapter President!

For the MBA of South Florida Chapter--- we have had a great past year with our educational luncheons, our signature annual Golf Tournament to support Make-a-Wish, and of course our annual Jackson's Children Hospital Santa event with even some local press coverage!!!   We have much to be proud of our continued success with our local Chapter.

We had a great Board last year and am very excited with our new incoming Board as well.   We had a very productive planning session in July and have started to set up our activities, committee members and committee chairs for the upcoming year.

Our focus this year is to do more......

Membership is extremely important to the association. We need to continue to drive to get more mortgage professionals into our Chapter membership and continue to improve on our attendance at the educational luncheons.  We improved our MPAC donations from the previous year as well, and continue to set the bar at higher levels.

From a State level we had great Conferences this year with the Secondary and the Annual Convention, with outstanding speakers, panels and activities at both events!!

A Special Thank You to our new South Florida Chapter Committee Chairs going into this upcoming year:

MBA of Central Florida Chapter News
by Tara Merritt, Chapter President

MBA Central Florida is enjoying a working summer. We kicked it off by having several chapter members attend our MBA Florida Convention where we had several members installed on our State Board, including our very own Kevin Strickland as President.

We hosted our Strategic Planning meeting on Thursday, July 21, 2016 at the Hilton Orlando-Altamonte Springs. We were fortunate to have 18 members in attendance, and some fabulous ideas for speakers, events and sponsors were shared. Our Programs Chair, Patti Spaniol, has taken our ideas and is running with them. Looks like we have September and October covered with others already falling into place so our calendar should be full by Fall.

Our Events Chair, Cat Brower, and Social Chair, Heidi Foster, are planning co-subcommittee meetings to plan for our year ahead. We are excited with the results of our transition to Constant Contact for our Chapter's communication. It has helped with renewals and also our membership drive/social.

We are hosting a social to thank members for renewing/joining, and encourage those who have not yet renewed/joined to do so. Free for members (they can even make payment at the event), and a fee for non-members. Mark the date, August 3, 2016 at Dexter's in Winter Park. It was such a hit last year that we are hosting again this year. We are excited for our state and local chapters to plan and execute another fabulous year.

With Summer almost over, we are gearing up for a great term. In May, we had our Officer Installation and also had Kelly Richards from CBC as our guest speaker. She covered Credit Trending. It was a very informative luncheon. We are very excited about our new board. We have some new faces along with some old timers. We have a Strategic Planning meeting set for the first week of August and we already have our venue reserved for each luncheon. We also have our first two guest speakers set up for August and September. We are looking forward to a very exciting year with fresh ideas and lots of energy.

The list of past presidents and all Brown L. Whatley award winners are listed. We even researched certain facts of what was happening in the world for a perspective.
Since 1952, the Mortgage Bankers Association of Florida (MBAF) has integrated the state's diverse real estate finance industry into a unified service organization. The MBAF is committed to promoting sound and ethical business practices in the mortgage banking industry; providing a powerful and responsible presence in Florida's legislative arena; educating its members in the most up-to-date practices and methods, so members can grow and mature in their careers; serving as a forum for communication and social interaction among peers; and adapting to change in a mercurial business environment, in order to help mortgage bankers succeed in that environment.
