Summer News Bulletin 2019

 Xenia zu Hohenlohe Introduction
Q2 was one of our busiest quarters in a long time as our team was part of a total of six key industry and climate events, with increasing demand both for sustainability to become an integral part of hotel operations, and for tourism to be an active participant in international climate discussions.

As in previous years I attended the Austrian World Summit, a key Climate Conference in Vienna, with an appearance by Greta Thunberg a definite highlight. Her presence, in tandem with Arnold Schwarzenegger’s unbound dedication to addressing climate issues, made for one of the strongest events I was able to participate in for a long time. As an active panel moderator as well as a presenter on the break out session for Tourism, I was extremely proud to showcase some of our hotel’s best practices as well as bring our know how to the table of these important international dialogues. Equally my colleagues Joanna and Benedetta co-hosted a joint presentation with the Carbon Trust, for a Peer Review on the leading hotel companies in carbon effective and environmental measures. This also highlighted how much needs to happen in our specific sector as tourism is still seen as one of main laggards when it comes to climate mitigation.

Impact of sustainable practices on the financial statement of a hotel
- by PKF hotelexperts
Demand for ecotourism has seen an annual growth rate equal to about 30% in recent years, according to a recent  release by Edie . The  booking.com Sustainable Travel Report  found that a large majority of global travellers (87 %) would like to travel sustainably and would pay at least 5% more to ensure their stay had a low environmental impact.

Furthermore, pressure from government, the public and team members will force corporations who generate demand for hotel rooms from Monday to Thursday to review their travel policies and hotel selection criteria. Green hotels can capture this increasingly environmentally conscious demand and can thus maintain or ideally increase their net room revenue. In the short term, especially hotels targeting millennial guests will profit from adapting their practices, as this generation is willing to spend more on sustainable offerings. A study by  Nielsen  from 2016 showed that about 66% of millennials are willing to pay more for products and services with a positive social and environmental impact.
Heckfield Place
Much has been written about the highly-anticipated Heckfield Place Hotel in Hampshire, which finally opened its doors late last summer after many years of painstaking but very loving and obviously very worthwhile renovations.

And it’s certainly been worth the wait! It has raised the bar for luxury hotels – not just in the UK, but in my mind in Europe as a whole.

More than just a country house hotel, it is a true country estate being run with a 360 degree vision on what is needed to sustain and maintain a self-sufficient stand-alone estate.
Qbic - our water saving heroes!
With the weather really heating up we wanted to highlight our water saving heroes - Qbic London City!

Since the hotel started using our  Con-Serve™  data management system in 2015, the hotel has shown its commitment to reducing its consumption by saving water for three years in a row. Even more impressive are the stats – they have almost halved their total consumption during this period with a 47% decrease in usage and 43% decrease in costs compared to 2015. To put this into perspective, the hotel has saved enough water over this period to fill two olympic-sized swimming pools!

Why it’s smart to consider a smart meter
The UK Government has set a deadline for the end of 2020, by which all households and small businesses will either have installed the new generation of Smart meters, the  SMETS2 , or will have been offered a chance to install one.

Recently there has been much speculation and debate in our industry as to whether this goal will be reached – particularly by the end of 2020 – as some analysts have suggested a deadline of the  end of 2023  would be more realistic and achievable.

Part of the reason for this likely delay is that small businesses have shown some reluctance in installing these new meters.

Sleep more sustainably with Hypnos Beds
Considerate supplier, Royal warrant holder and award-winning luxury bedmaker, Hypnos, has announced that its Princes Risborough site has successfully achieved compliance with ISO 14001, the standard that specifies requirements for an effective environmental management system (EMS).

This internationally-recognised certification is further proof of the company’s sustainability leadership in the bed manufacturing industry and the importance it attributes to ensuring the highest possible environmental standards.

Over the last 10 years, Hypnos has undergone a comprehensive sustainability journey and the road to compliance has required the company to review the way it operates in order to achieve a wide range of environmental objectives. These have included efforts to reduce the CO 2 produced per unit by 10% each year, to maintain carbon neutrality and to eliminate factory waste going to landfill.

Award-winning AI technology helps IHG fight food waste
The InterContinental Hotels Group, one of the world’s leading hotel companies, recently announced a partnership with technology company and Considerate supplier Winnow to help its hotels automatically track, measure and reduce food waste for more sustainable and efficient restaurant and bar operations.

IHG is the first global hotel company to use the award-winning Winnow Vision AI enabled technology, which will help its hotels achieve a 30% reduction in food waste. Through the use of an intelligent camera, smart scales and AI-based smart meter technology, Winnow Vision analyses ingredients during food preparation, as well as plates returned to the kitchen, to assess which food items are most wasted and in what quantities.
