On Friday, June 11, 2021, Culpepper Garden hosted a health and wellness fair, one of the first in-person community events held since last year’s pandemic outbreak. Over 50 residents and caregivers attended the event and received valuable information and resources on healthy aging, stress relief, healthy eating, ways to boost memory, and resources for vision and hearing impaired, among other topics.

The fair was sponsored by Virginia Hospital Center and included several organizations who set up informational displays, shared information and answered questions. Participants included Old Dominion Health Care, Viva Vita (Virtual Reality), INF Cares (Virtual assistant tablets), Northern Virginia Resource Center for Deaf and Hard of Hearing Persons and representatives from various programs offered by Virginia Hospital Center.

Residents walked away feeling hydrated, happy, and relaxed thanks to smoothies provided by our dining services team and massages in our spa inspired multi-purpose room. Many thanks to our Resident Services team and our Volunteer Manager for putting together a wonderful event. We look forward to hosting more events like this in the future.

Thank you to all who attended our Spring Garden Walks. The daffodils have now faded away, but our residents and community volunteers have been busy the last few weeks planting flowers and bushes for the summer season! We are looking forward to the lovely variety of plants that will soon be blossoming in our garden. Amsonia, The Blues, Chokeberry and Arrowwood are just some of the flora that were planted. Funds awarded from the Keep Virginia Beautiful annual green garden grant will also help with purchasing additional plants and shrubs.

Garden visitors have fondly observed a great show of nature with the multitude of birds, cicada, and even a bat. The addition of several bird feeders throughout the garden and wooded area has especially enhanced the habitat for our feathered friends. The bird feeders are part of our Naming Rights Campaign in conjunction with of our garden restoration initiative. Many of our supporters and resident family members have chosen to honor their loved ones with this and other naming rights in the garden.

Opportunities abound to join our Daffodil Society or have your name inscribed on a garden item including a bird feeder, garden stone, garden bed, bench, pavilion, picnic table and more! We invite you to leave a garden legacy for as the playwright Lin-Manuel Miranda said,  “Legacy. What is a legacy? I moved to Culpepper Garden because it feels like a bit of country in the city. There are raised garden beds for those (and I am one) who love to plant flowers and veggies and it is an affordable place to live amidst this expensive area. There is an assisted living wing, so that should I ever have to need their services, I know I can age in place and my daughter does not have to make that decision.  -- Ms. Dee
