Health and Wellness Fair Brings in Community

On Friday, June 11, 2021, Culpepper Garden hosted a health and wellness fair, one of the first in-person community events held since last year’s pandemic outbreak. Over 50 residents and caregivers attended the event and received valuable information and resources on healthy aging, stress relief, healthy eating, ways to boost memory, and resources for vision and hearing impaired, among other topics.

The fair was sponsored by Virginia Hospital Center and included several organizations who set up informational displays, shared information and answered questions. Participants included Old Dominion Health Care, Viva Vita (Virtual Reality), INF Cares (Virtual assistant tablets), Northern Virginia Resource Center for Deaf and Hard of Hearing Persons and representatives from various programs offered by Virginia Hospital Center.

Residents walked away feeling hydrated, happy, and relaxed thanks to smoothies provided by our dining services team and massages in our spa inspired multi-purpose room. Many thanks to our Resident Services team and our Volunteer Manager for putting together a wonderful event. We look forward to hosting more events like this in the future.

Thanks to funding from Arlington County, we will continue to share resources through our upcoming Caregiver Week programs scheduled for June 14th – 18th. To sign up or for more information, contact agomez@culpeppergarden.org

Summer Plantings and Garden Volunteers

IMG_0020_For Facebook-1.jpg

Thank you to all who attended our Spring Garden Walks. The daffodils have now faded away, but our residents and community volunteers have been busy the last few weeks planting flowers and bushes for the summer season! We are looking forward to the lovely variety of plants that will soon be blossoming in our garden. Amsonia, The Blues, Chokeberry and Arrowwood are just some of the flora that were planted. Funds awarded from the Keep Virginia Beautiful annual green garden grant will also help with purchasing additional plants and shrubs.

Garden visitors have fondly observed a great show of nature with the multitude of birds, cicada, and even a bat. The addition of several bird feeders throughout the garden and wooded area has especially enhanced the habitat for our feathered friends. The bird feeders are part of our Naming Rights Campaign in conjunction with of our garden restoration initiative. Many of our supporters and resident family members have chosen to honor their loved ones with this and other naming rights in the garden.

Opportunities abound to join our Daffodil Society or have your name inscribed on a garden item including a bird feeder, garden stone, garden bed, bench, pavilion, picnic table and more! We invite you to leave a garden legacy for as the playwright Lin-Manuel Miranda said,  “Legacy. What is a legacy? It's planting seeds in a garden you never get to see.” Except in our case, you will be able to see and enjoy for years to come. Contact jwitcher@culpeppergarden.org for more information.

Culpepper Garden Receives Grant Award

Culpepper Garden is thrilled to receive a $1,000 grant from Keep America Beautiful as part of its 11th Annual “Green Grants” awarded in June 2021! A special focus of the Green Grants this year is to support diverse groups and underserved populations. Each day in June, a different grant winner will be announced on the website. This award recognizes the work of Culpepper Garden, Arlington’s largest affordable senior community and the first low-income senior community in the U.S. to provide assisted living. Funds will be used to further expand and maintain our garden and provide an accessible, year-round green space oasis for residents, their loved ones, and the greater Arlington community to enjoy.

Toiletry Donations Needed

Culpepper Garden is seeking donations of toiletry items to assist the 73 frail, low-income seniors receiving supportive care in our Assisted Living residence. Toiletry items such as soap, laundry detergent, socks, shampoo, toothbrush, toothpaste, etc. are greatly needed to help residents with their daily living needs. If you would like to host a toiletries drive or donate items, contact Ashley Gomez at agomez@culpeppergarden.org or visit our Amazon Wish List to order online.

Home Instead Charities is providing $150,000 matching grants and every organization is eligible for up to $5,000. We'll send you more information soon but for now, we'd love for you to save the date and plan to give. Thanks so much for your generosity.

Resident Testimonial

I moved to Culpepper Garden because it feels like a bit of country in the city. There are raised garden beds for those (and I am one) who love to plant flowers and veggies and it is an affordable place to live amidst this expensive area. There is an assisted living wing, so that should I ever have to need their services, I know I can age in place and my daughter does not have to make that decision.  -- Ms. Dee
