JULY 2021
THE BEST OUTCOME

On Friday afternoon about 3 PM a caring landowner in New Haven called about a tiny owl that was on the ground. It had been contained and was available for pickup. Volunteer Ross Eagleson was there in 15 minutes to pick up a baby Eastern Screech Owl. The youngster was transported to Soarin' Hawk's ICU, where it was checked for injuries, received saline solution for rehydration, and was cleared to be "renested" the next morning.

Saturday morning at 10:30 AM, the nest cavity had been located (there were several possibilities) and a renesting plan was in place. This little fellow was feeling very feisty and ready to go back home. He was placed in a plastic bucket and hoisted up to the top of the ladder, where he was placed in the nest cavity by Ross' friendly gloved hand. The little guy very quickly made his way up the vertical hollow limb and out of sight.

The property owner promised to keep an eye out for him if he were to make that mistake again! Good luck, little guy!
THIS IS WHY

On December 15, 2020, a little screech owl came to us with an eye injury. After nearly 3 months, he passed his flight and feeding tests, so it was time for him to go home. Volunteers Nancy and Kristen Wilder released him where he was found.

RESCUE OF THE MONTH - 05242021 OSPR
by Bill Oberg
On May 24, Steve Sapienza and a friend were out at the Ontario Dam, photographing wildlife from kayaks. They were met at the boat launch by an osprey who led them to her injured mate. Steve called Soarin' Hawk, and we dispatched Bill Oberg to pick up the bird. Here is Bill's story:

I volunteered to go get an Osprey down in the marshes near the Ontario Dam. I arrived and met the kayakers who found it. We discussed the best way to secure the bird, including kayaking across the marsh. I drove across to the area and met them on the other side. The roads to get back there were minimal at best. Speed of no more than 5 miles per hour. After I tried several times to go thru thick brush and brambles, resulting in many scratches before I decided on a change of clothes, we came to the decision that I would meet the kayakers down a way, give them a net, and explain how to net him. They took the net, followed my instructions, and brought him back to me, and I took him back to ICU.

Please, please remember: If you find an injured bird or animal, you give them the best chance at survival by contacting a DNR-permitted rehabber as soon as possible. By law, you may keep the injured animal for only 24 hours. While you search for a rehab, do not hold or pet the animal, and do not feed or give it water. Just put it in a box in quiet place, away from activity and noise. If you have difficulty finding a licensed rehab for a non-raptor, call the Soarin' Hawk rescue line (260-241-0134) and we will help you try to find someone.
WAYS TO SUPPORT OUR MISSION

We have a website where you can buy Friends of Soarin' Hawk logo wear (https://c4.corporatespiritwear.com/)! Please share this address with friends and family because this website is for everyone. Everything you order will be shipped directly to you. Show your raptor pride!

Do you love Soarin’ Hawk and need some new clothing at the same time? :) Soarin’ Hawk now has a shop on Zazzle. The artwork has been created by several of our volunteers, including Frank Allen from Fort Wayne and Gigi Stewart from Antwerp, OH. All proceeds of the sales go directly to Soarin' Hawk! You can order t-shirts, sweatshirts and lots more with drawings and photos. Some are of our birds and others are raptors in general.

A tip: Shipping on Zazzle is expensive. You might want to opt for their "Zazzle Black" free shipping which is $9.95 for the year. I know the first time I ordered some test designs, I paid for the regular shipping and it was a lot more than $9.95. Also, watch for the Zazzle promo codes that are usually posted on their website!!

Click here to go to Soarin' Hawk's Zazzle store, or just go to zazzle.com and search for SoarinHawk.

TINY DINOSAUR HEARD BETTER THAN A BARN OWL

With unusually large eyes and hair-trigger hearing, the tiny desert-dwelling dinosaur hunted its prey at night, offering more definitive evidence that dinosaurs weren't only active in the daytime.
