A Message from our Program Coordinator:
Hello Early Learning Professionals!

I hope all is going well for all of you.  I’m excited to tell you about a wonderful opportunity I had to brag about the amazing care that is provided in Douglas, Klamath and Lake counties while I was visiting our nation’s capital. Child Care Resource and Referral agencies from all over the country were there attending the Child Care Aware Symposium -In Person! We had great conversation, compared notes, and shared successes. The highlight was sharing with Oregon’s legislators’ stories from our region and driving home the need for workforce in the field and more support for children and families seeking care.  I was so happy to represent our region and promote childcare initiatives and funding.

On another note, we are cooking up some great classes and opportunities for this summer and fall. I want to thank all of you who take the time to turn in surveys at our conferences and classes to help us learn how to best serve you. I know that you have completed soooooo many surveys and sometimes you might wonder if those answers shift the focus of our work and I want to assure you, it does. Our recent conference surveys tell us that some of you are ready for in-person classes again, some of you would like a little of both online and in person and some of you would like to continue meeting online. We also see that there is a growing desire to seek college opportunity and for us to provide more classes in specific CKC’s. Please take the time to look over our summer class offerings and register for classes that support your personal and program goals. We appreciate you at Care Connections and we hope you fit some summer fun in for you and your family.

Sincerely,

Heather

Douglas County Background Check information
Currently in Douglas County there is not a field print office to get fingerprinted for your CBR. You may contact the background specialist listed on the letter you receive when you apply and can request to roll their prints on a hard card; back to the good ol' days. Applicants need to request this through the background specialist assigned to them in order to schedule the roll on hard copy of their prints.
Sutherlin Child Care Provider receives First Citizens Outstanding Service Award
On April 30th, the Sutherlin Chamber of Commerce hosted a sold-out event in a crowded Social Hall to celebrate the 66th annual First Citizens Banquet. The event highlighted the people who have been committed to Sutherlin with their selfless acts of volunteerism. Joanna Avery, owner and operator of her licensed child care home business for twenty five years, certainly bespeaks this dedication. Joanna received the Outstanding Service Award.

Joanna has been dedicated to her child care families who really are like family to her. She goes above and beyond to make them feel loved. Not only bestowing love and care into her business, she has been volunteering and involved in her community for over 25 years. She follows in her family's footstep's as she comes from a long line of volunteerism in her family. Alongside her Mom, she helps with the Sutherlin community Halloween Carnival, Easter Egg Hunt, Lady Lions Events, Sutherlin Blackberry Festival, and more.

The children from Joanna’s original group are now adults and many decided they wanted Joanna to care for their own children as well. It is not uncommon that other children who were part of her program also stop by to see her and say hello.  That really shows the influence a provider can have on a child and the bond of trust that can be passed on from generation to generation.
Klamath's Focus Child Care Network

The Focused Child Care Network cohort continues to grow!  Our newest licensed Early Educator from our FCCN group of Spanish speakers is Maria Teresa Perez Barajas (Tere). We want to acknowledge her hard work and perseverance throughout this process. She says it was all worth the extra effort!  Tere has been taking Early Childhood classes since the fall of 2019 and is now enrolled in
Computer Technology classes at KCC for Spanish
speaking students.  Congratulations Tere!

Last month we held our first ever, SPRING FLING! Thanks to all of you who were able to attend. It was our way to show how much we appreciate the care and education you provide to Klamath’s children. Bravo to all of you!

We continue on our journey with SPARK. We have five C2Q (Commitment to Quality) programs who have their eyes on their 3 Star designation. Fingers crossed that they will be able to advance on their portfolio during the summer.

To all of you, have a beautiful summer!

The Back-to-School Cohort had a delightful Spring term! A new ECE College Navigator, Cherry, started in March as Dani will focus on other hats of her position. Spring term was the first time since the pandemic hit that the cohort was able get together in-person, which brought a wonderful sense of community.

We welcomed many new cohort members and celebrated a couple of graduates during our last Cohort Meeting. With the campus slowly coming back in-person, new resources and scholarships were found and offered to the cohort.
The cohort will be hosting an ECE Orientation Picnic on Saturday, August 27th where interested UCC students (new and current) can find out detailed information about the UCC ECE program and Back-to-School Cohort. Families are welcome and lunch is provided!

A cheerful congratulations to our graduating students of 2022 : Michelle Hanks, Samantha Vogt, and Miranda Barney!
