HAPPY NATIONAL SENIOR CITIZENS DAY!

Today, August 21st is National Senior Citizens Day, a time to celebrate the achievements and lasting impact of older adults in our communities.

Since 1971, Carter Burden Network has been dedicated to promoting the well-being of older New Yorkers through a variety of meaningful programs and services. This day is a wonderful reminder of why our work matters and of the people we proudly serve.

We’re excited to share our Summer newsletter with you, which highlights the inspiring programs, people, and partnerships that make our mission possible. Enjoy!

Events

Celebrating Fathers Day with CBN

We are always so excited to celebrate the fathers and grandfathers in our community at fun Father’s Day celebrations at our Older Adult Centers. This year, CBN members enjoyed music, laughter, delicious desserts, and more to honor the wonderful fathers and grandfathers who bring so much joy to our community. We are grateful for the warmth, wisdom, and spirit you share with us every day. Thank you for being such an important part of our centers!

Summer Fun with Carter Burden Network

Whether enjoying engaging programs or simply cooling off from the summer sun, CBN members have made the most of our Older Adult Centers this season. As official NYC Cooling Centers, our centers offer both fun and essential relief from the heat.

Healthy Movement with CBN

From dance and tai chi to gentle stretching and balance exercises, our programs help members stay active, improve mobility, and boost overall well-being, all while having fun and connecting with others. Regular movement is especially important for older adults, as it supports independence, reduces the risk of falls, and promotes a healthy mind and body.

Meet the Artists at Carter Burden Gallery

At Carter Burden Gallery, we proudly showcase the work of New York City's re-emerging older professional artists. Our diverse community of artists brings a wealth of experience and unique perspectives to the art world. Through their work, they explore a range of themes and mediums, contributing to a vibrant and dynamic artistic dialogue.

Explore the profiles below to learn more about the individuals behind the art and their creative journeys.

Nieves Saah

"My name is Nieves Saah and I’m originally from Spain. In 1984 I moved to New York looking for exhibition opportunities and galleries to represent me. Since then, I’ve had had my work showed widely in the US and Europe.

Finding out about the Carter Burden Gallery and its dedication to older artists has been greatly gratifying. In the nine years since, I had numerous shows, sold my work and I had interviews and magazines and radio coverage. That’s fabulous exposures and I’m very proud and happy to be part of a Chelsea gallery that is more like an artist’s community. Marlena and Sarah are doing spectacular work. I’m very grateful for their friendship and care."

Quimetta Perle

"I am very happy to be showing three of my major textile pieces at Carter Burden Gallery.  These fabric works delve into different political and emotional spaces that women occupy. Liberty  is an emphatic expression of the desire and thirst for freedom, embodied by a militant, allegorical Liberty. She is depicted as a strong, Black woman, very similar to the one I hoped would be leading the American people. Mermaid and Creatures of the Sea and Air is dazzling and joyous. It celebrates the ability to survive and thrive in diverse environments, negotiating the depths of the subconscious as well as the workaday world of the surface. This is not The Little Mermaid, a foolishly romantic Disnification, but an older, wiser mermaid. Witness (for Shazia Sikander) is a gesture to an artist whose beautiful bronze statue honoring women’s strength was beheaded by a man with a hammer. It is spiritual in nature, celebrating the triumph of the spirit over the hatefulness of the perpetrator."

Joan Mellon

"As a painter working in two and three dimensions for more than three decades, it has always been my hope that what I do has meaning for others through the materials I use—their sensuality, color, texture, and ability to convey reality as we see, experience, and imagine it. In recent years, the focus of my work has been on recognizable objects and the space they live in. As a professional artist in my early eighties, the support of the Carter Burden Gallery, a commercial gallery in the heart of New York City, has a stabilizing effect on my life and gives me the freedom and confidence to go in new directions."

Leave a Legacy with CBN

August is National Make-A-Will Month

Did you know that nearly 2 out of 3 American adults still don't have an up-to-date will? Explore free online will-making platforms like www.freewill.com or Giftwise to create a simple will or to document your wishes.

Consider leaving a legacy that supports Carter Burden Network and the older adults we serve. A planned gift ensures your values and commitments live on and helps sustain vital programs for years to come. National Make-A-Will Month highlights the importance of creating or updating a will.

Whether through a personalized will, a trust, or a beneficiary designation on retirement accounts or life insurance, your support can make a meaningful difference for the CBN community. By planning ahead, you can create a lasting impact that continues to enrich older adult lives long into the future.

Highlighted Volunteer Experience: Friendly Visiting

Volunteers participate in social visits with older adults who share common interests and hobbies. They serve as companions and may play a game, take a walk, or chat about current events.

Our Older Adult Center Friendly Visiting Program targets the Upper East Side, East Harlem, and Midtown Older Adults, while our Case Management Unit's Friendly Visiting Program includes Manhattan Community Districts 8, 9, 10, 11 (Upper East Side, East Harlem, Central Harlem, Morningside and Hamilton Heights, and some in the Bronx). This volunteer opportunity has a 6 month minimum commitment and requires a background check, two non-familial reference, and a training/ orientation.
