Summer 2023 Newsletter

Message from the President

Dear IDA-Oregon Community,

Happy Summer, and congratulations to all of the graduates out there, we are so proud of you!

I hope that each of you will enjoy some rest and rejuvenation over the summertime months. In our summer newsletter edition, we celebrate the recent work that's been accomplished in our community.

Be Well,

Danielle Thompson, President IDA-Oregon

Training Delivered In Person

Spring Symposium Success!

Tremendous thanks to Board Member Jesse Rapport for helping organize our Spring Symposium held at The University of Portland. Our guest speaker, Dr. Lucy Hart Paulson delivered an inspiring day of research and deep learning around early indicators of later literacy.

We are grateful to our community sponsors, scholarship donors, as well as to all our attendees for spending the day with us!

Congratulations Are In Order!

Congratulations to Meg Huwe on her high school graduation! Meg served on the IDA-Oregon Student Empowerment Panel, where her advocacy work benefited countless other students. Moving forward, she will pursue a career in geriatric social work, and will start on that journey with courses at PCC. Thank you, Meg!

Congratulations to Jared Blank, who has accepted a new position as Chief of Staff with the University of Texas Football Team. Jared will be stepping down from his current President-Elect role on our IDA-Oregon Board of Directors, but he will remain engaged from a distance as a valued part of our Advisory Board. So we are not saying good bye, and instead we'll say "Hook 'em Horns"!

Oh la la, there's a new chef in town!

Congratulations to Emma Newell on her graduation from the Cascade Culinary Institute! Emma is a former member of the IDA-Oregon Student Empowerment Panel, and she has now earned her Associates of Applied Science in Culinary Arts.

Student Panel Presentations Given

Students travelled to Bend, Oregon in April to present their assistive technology as part of the Central Oregon Dyslexia Conference. We'd like to thank Sharon Bellusci of Decoding Dyslexia Central Oregon for organizing the conference, and we thank these students for their leadership: Kimia, Owen, Bella, TJ, Spencer, Ryliie, and Kal.

Members of our student empowerment panel shared their journeys with dyslexia to educators attending The University of Portland's Science of Reading Symposium on May 13th

Led by Shelbe Park, the IDA-Oregon Student Empowerment Group for 8th-12th graders is a great way to meet peers in the area, socialize and grow valuable leadership skills
