SafeSpot Summer Newsletter

Welcome to the first edition of the SafeSpot Newsletter! This quarterly newsletter will share program updates, outreach highlights, helpful resources, and more. Whether you are already part of the SafeSpot community or are learning about us for the first time, we are glad you are here!

Who We Are

SafeSpot is a free, confidential, 24/7, nationwide overdose prevention hotline. We connect people using drugs alone with a trained operator who can stay on the phone with them while they use and call for help in case of overdose. SafeSpot operators have lived and living experience using drugs, and the service is available to anyone using drugs alone. We are not a treatment or recovery hotline - our focus is keeping people safe, supported, and connected without judgment. Learn More

Info Call Connection

Curious about SafeSpot? Make an info call!

Just call the line and let the operator know you want to learn more about the hotline. The operator can explain the service, answer questions, or help someone practice creating a safety plan. Info calls are a low-pressure way for prospective callers to become familiar with the service before they need it. They are also a great tool for providers, outreach workers, family members, and community partners who want to explain SafeSpot accurately and confidently to others.

How long have you been calling SafeSpot?

Caller: "Oh god, I think I started calling in May, two years ago, two or three years ago."

Why do you call SafeSpot and why do you continue calling?

Caller: "I always rather use SafeSpot. SafeSpot gives me the chance to still use safely and somewhat more responsibly."

"...I know the operators pretty well and it's nice to have people to talk to. You guys support my physical health, you support my mental health..."

Meet Shae!

"I chose to work at SafeSpot because I wanted to be part of an organization making a meaningful difference in people’s lives. I originally majored in Culinary Arts, and cooking is still my first love—I enjoy finding ways to blend my passion for food with my passion for helping people. Outside of work, I host private cooking events, spend time entertaining my two cats, and focus on keeping my mind and body active. "

Road Trippin'

SafeSpot has logged some serious miles over the past few months, bringing information about our lifesaving overdose prevention hotline to communities across the country. From sharpening our driving skills in Mass parking lots to chasing the runner’s high (or maybe just the high) at the Boston Marathon, to watching Stephen take the international TEDx stage, we have definitely not been cruising in the slow lane in 2026.

Several members of the team came together for Boston Medical Center’s Together for Hope conference in April, where we learned so much and heard Stephen and Meg speak about family dynamics. Along the way, we also spent time with Stella, Connecticut’s prevention starfish; cheered on Alicia as she presented her poster at NatCon in Denver; and joined Mark and the team at CSO in Northampton, MA.

The many miles, late-night flights, hot and sunny outdoor events, and long days and nights are worth it when they mean helping more people learn about SafeSpot. Our next stop could be your community, organization, or team. We look forward to seeing you out on the road!
