Update on Secondary School Students

In 2020 Reaching Beyond Globally began sponsoring 10 students in their secondary school education. Four years later they are preparing to graduate and begin their vocational studies.

So close to Completing Secondary School

In 2020 Reading Beyond Globally began its sponsorship program, funding secondary school for 10 students. In 2024 these students will complete their secondary school education and head on to two years of vocational and trade schools. They have shown their commitment to their education through school shut downs during COVID-19, learning through radio programs, creating study groups together so when schools re-opened they did not lose momentum. They have shown their passion for learning by placing in the top of their classes, running math programs, becoming ambassadors for their schools, playing on school sports teams, participating in peer counseling programs, tutoring students, and maintaining high grades each term.

They are now "candidates" for graduation, and have a very intense study program to prepare them for final exams. They are in class from early morning through late at night, and remain in school during holiday breaks when other students return home. They will be taking practice exams during the next 3 months and then take their final exit exams in November.

It has been amazing to watch as they progress, mature and maintain their dedication to reaching for their goals.

Reaching Beyond Globally is thrilled that we will continue to sponsor them through their two years of vocational education.

New Thematic Curriculum

The Ugandan Ministry of Education and Sports has replaced its old subject based curriculum with the Thematic Curriculum. This competency-based curriculum increases the students' ability to acquire the knowledge and skills they need for success upon graduation. It lays a firm foundation for life skills, being effective citizens, having success in the world of work, self-employment and further education.

Making the transition to this new curriculum was a challenge for the students. Not only did they have to purchase new books for each subject, but they had to learn how to do research and then apply the new information to practical situations. As the school year proceeded, the students began to understand and excel in this new way of learning.

“In competency based questions I have observed that we need to relate what we study in class in our daily life in order to appreciate them. I have experienced projects in Agriculture where we have so far done 2 projects about cereals and vegetable growing. Now I am able to identify certain diseases and pests that attack crops in the garden since I was able to observe them during the project about vegetables. I can plant maize seeds in an improved way compared to what I used to do in the village since I learned the proper spacing of maize which is 75 cm by 35 cm. “  S3 student Akudizie Peter

Congratulations to Madrine

Madrine Nalukwago has been the inspiration and “boots on the ground” for Reaching Beyond Globally since its inception. She keeps the program going by remaining connected to the students, parents and schools. She manages the students when they are home for breaks, attends conferences and Visit Days, keeps them motivated and inspired, sees to it that their needs and requirements are met, and keeps Reaching Beyond Globally informed about their progress and needs.

Prior to her position with Reaching Beyond Globally, Madrine attended nursing and mid-wife school, and stands as an inspiration to all of the students RBG sponsors and is the mid-wife at Em’s Clinic in Kiryabicooli. We just received the news that she has been appointed Clinic Manager of the clinic. This is a huge acknowledgement of her work ethic and commitment to the people in the village and serves as a lovely role model for our students. Madrine’s response to her new position, “I have never thought or expected this at all in my life”. We are not surprised at all. Please join us as we extend our congratulations to Madrine for this step up.

The grace with which Madrine cares for her young daughter, the students sponsored by RBG, and the patients of the clinic is a true testament of the amazing woman she is. We are truly blessed to have her be part of our program.
