The Griffin Museum of Photography is delighted to offer this workshop with two photography powerhouses, Alexa Dilworth and Aline Smithson, as part of our programming to accompany the 26th Annual Juried Members Exhibition.

Text + Image: Shifting Perceptions  examines the relationships between images and texts in a photobook or as part of a photographic project. Words create another layer of description, sometimes as a respite from images and sometimes as a way of elevating and complicating photographs. The skillful combination of text and images transcends simple storytelling and is an art unto itself.

Alexa comes to the subject as the publishing director and senior editor at the Center for Documentary Studies (CDS)

at Duke University, having worked at  DoubleTake  magazine, on myriad monographs, and with photographers and writers who have won CDS’s awards. Aline’s exploration of the power of text and image is garnered from her experiences in creating her own works and as the founding editor of  Lenscratch.  Join us to be inspired by the limitless and transformative possibilities that these two art forms have when in conversation with each other.

The topic is intentionally broad to include diverse voices within a common theme. The American Landscape has been considered variously as a providential gift, a mythic wilderness, a spiritual embodiment, or a spiritless object to be tamed and exploited. It has been worshipped, built upon, and it has been spoiled.

We added a morning offering as the evening offering sold out.

After you’ve made the image, what happens once the image is in your computer is one of the most important steps in your work. Adobe Lightroom will help you get the most out of your images and create an organized workflow.

"Historically there are many easily arguable reasons photographers should choose to make work of their own lives rather than tell stories of others. During divisive times, I struggle to find means of acknowledging my place and respecting others. At the same time, I want to learn while broadening my horizons and collaborating with others to build bridges between communities, while still respecting ethical processes and storytelling.

This talk will attempt to share my thinking while showing some of the project work I have produced, predominantly from the publication  Mni Wiconi , Honoring the Water Protectors and the Ongoing Struggle for Indigenous Sovereignty ." - JW
Willis’ work, “Requiem for the Innocent” and a sampling of the Water Protectors Book will be exhibited at Gallery Kayafas , opening in September.
