SUMMER POETRY WORKSHOPS

WITH TERRY LUCAS

Poems of risk: writing outside your comfort zone...

  • Saturday June 1-July 13 (six sessions via Zoom—we will skip July 6.)
  • 1:00-3:30 PM PDT (2:00-4:30 MDT; 3:00 – 5:30 CDT; 4:00-6:30 EDT.)
  • Limit of 8 poets.
  • $295 for the 6 Sessions.
  • Earlybird enrollment by May 11 is $245.
  • Email lucas.t274@gmail.com to secure your spot.

This six-week workshop will look at your lyrical / narrative poems in any form (free verse, prose poem, formal, etc.) and help develop strategies for breaking out of your comfort zone. Among others, we will utilize craft elements and examples from Kevin Clark’s The Mind’s Eye: A Guide to Writing Poetry. About the language of risk, Clark writes: “Because all human beings harbor strange ideas and habits, what seems odd may actually be the norm. In order to find an original or true voice in their poetry, good poets find ways to mine their own interior eccentricities.” Each week we will open the workshop with a poem by a prominent poet and discuss what elements can help you write outside of your comfort zone. Then we will look at your poems in light of taking risks. Of course, any craft element may be discussed that can strengthen your poems.

Refunds. Between now and June 1, an 80% refund will be issued upon email cancellation. After the first workshop and before the second workshop (June 8), a 60% refund will be issued upon email cancellation. After the second workshop (June 8), no refunds will be issued. Email for cancellation is lucas.t274@gmail.com.

TESTIMONIALS

Terry's poetry workshops are smart, supportive, and convivial. The participants give helpful feedback, guided by Terry's insightful reading of the poems. His focus on craft is especially useful. And the fee is more than reasonable. I highly recommend them!

Terry Lucas brings his passion and enviable skills as a poet and writing coach to his poetry workshops. With each class, you hone your writing and revising skills from Terry's close readings of your work, classmate critiques, and craft examples written by leading poets.

—Merna Skinner, President and Founder of Satori Communications, Inc. and author of A Tale of Two Aprons.

Terry’s workshops help me to work within my own style of poetry and develop my voice. I really feel comfortable in his no-pressure-no-stress weekly meetings in small, intimate groups. I also appreciate the different focuses for each workshop, ranging from first lines to narrative that makes me reexamine smaller aspects of my own poems.

—M. E. Silverman, author of The Floating Door (Glass Lyre Press) and Founder of Blue Lyra Review & Blue Lyra Press

I’ve been impressed by how much I learn from Terry Lucas and his workshops. He assigns a poem for close reading and is adept at pulling craft elements out of both the assigned poem and the poems presented each week by participants. The other writers have distinct voices and bring a variety of styles, but the quality of writing is uniformly outstanding and the critiques from fellow writers are supportive and very helpful. They inspire me to write my own best.
