Tips for Parents

Parents are one of the greatest influences on children to prevent them from using drugs.

  1. Supervise: Make sure there is always a responsible adult checking in on teens.
  2. Monitor: Always know where your child will be and who they will be with.
  3. Clear Expectations: Talk often with your child about the rules and consequences of using drugs.

The “Talk. They Hear You.” campaign aims to reduce underage drinking and substance use among youth by providing parents and caregivers with information and resources they need to address alcohol and other drug use with their children early.
Family Checkup is a toolkit from the National Institute on Drug Abuse that highlights parenting skills that are important in preventing the initiation and progression of drug use among youth.
