Meet Superman! Sired via artificial insemination, this little fella was born June 28 to mom Superior. (Scroll down to read more about Superior, our July Cow of the Month!)

Superman's unique silver markings and superior genetics make him a standout. He's the great-grandson of Scarlet, one of the top-producing cows in our herd, and the son of one of the best Holstein sires of the early 1980s.

Typically, bull calves born on our farm are sold to a local farmer who raises them as beef cows -- standard practice in the dairy industry. When a bull calf is born as genetically superior as Superman here, we'll keep him and he'll mature into what's known in the industry as a "clean-up bull." A clean-up bull is called upon to breed a cow for whom artificial insemination was ineffective.

With his Superior genetics, Superman is poised to become a fine alternative sire!

Our July Cow of the Month turns 3 years old on July 10. She's a "wonderful cow with a lot of potential," says Herd Manager Blake.

"It's exciting to see her develop so well. It's pure satisfaction when you see the work that goes into breeding selection result in strong and healthy cows."

In an easy delivery on June 28, Superior gave birth to a superior bull calf we named Superman. (See our Photo of the Month above for more information about Superman.)

It was a much different experience than her first calving last July 4 when high heat and humidity made for a "tough delivery," Blake says. But with a few days of rest, cooling sprinklers and air conditioning, Superior pulled through. Atta girl!
