Oshkosh Poet Laureate 2021 Apply by Mon., June 7

The City of Oshkosh, in partnership with Oshkosh Public Library and the Convention and Visitors Bureau, is accepting applications for our community’s first poet laureate. If you are 18 years of age or older, live within the Oshkosh Area School District boundaries, and write original poetry, you are eligible to apply. The poet will receive a $2,000 annual honorarium.

New! Low vision desktop video magnifier

If you have a visual impairment or difficulty reading fine print, old maps or faded text, the library’s low vision desktop video magnifier can help. The new magnifier is located on the Second Floor and is available during library hours. Stop by the service desk for assistance. This recent technology upgrade was partially funded by a generous patron donation.

What will you read, watch or do this month?

Write and illustrate an original comic book as part of the Mark Gruenwald Comic Book Creation Challenge. All ages are welcome to participate as individuals or in teams. If you haven’t seen last year’s winners video, you can watch it here. Brand new, free books are given to teens and tweens who would like to participate in the library’s monthly book clubs on Zoom. Kids in grades 6 – 12 can reserve a Teen DIY Make and Take Kit for a Teen DIY meetup on Zoom. Make a pretty lace paper bookmark with the supplies included in this month’s Adult DIY Take Home Kit. One of the best kept secrets on our website is the Shelf Selected book and movie recommendations curated by our expert librarians. It is a treasure trove of reading lists for all ages organized by topic or genre.

The concepts of talk, sing, read, write and play are essential parts of developing literacy skills during early childhood. These short videos offer quick tips to nurture babies’ learning and curiosity.

The Federal Communications Commission has launched a temporary program to help people afford internet service. Certain conditions must be met to qualify. If you know someone who lacks internet access, please share this information with them.

Oshkosh Public Museum Menominee Clan Pow Wow

Saturday, June 5, 2021 Noon - 6 p.m. Pow Wow Grand Entry 1 p.m. In honor of the Menominee Clans Story, carved and painted by Menominee artist, James F. Frechette, Jr., the Oshkosh Public Museum invites the public to the permanent exhibition’s opening. Two Native American food vendors and 13 art vendors will be part of the event. The Pow Wow is free to the public and general admission is charged for museum entry.
