| | | Summer Reading Program is a wrap! | | A letter from the Director | | |
Thanks to everyone who took part in our Summer Reading Programs and Unearthed a Story with us this summer. We really appreciate you coming and spending your time with us at the library, and we hope you enjoyed our programs. We had a great time with you all! We'd also like to thank all of the presenters and organizations that helped support our programmers. Thanks to the Friends of the Wallkill Public Library, Perfect Combination Painting, Stewart's, Wallkill Greenhouse, and the Wallkill Woman's Club for your generous donations to the library in support of summer reading! Thanks to Marla and Michelle for making the trek to make sure we got the Foam Cannon and Dino Bones when we needed them! Thank you to our performers and presenters: children's author Lily Bergeron, Ethie and Zoe, magician Conrad Colon, DJ Lammy, Brad from Paper Heart Puppets, the Mid-Hudson Discovery Museum, Hudson Valley Reptiles & Rescue, Never Stop Moving 365, Vision of Wallkill, Christina's Sweet Treats and our partners within the Wallkill Central School District for helping to make this summers' programs and events happen. Thanks to our teen volunteers Aubrey, Brielle, Darron, Emily, Ireland, Jaidan, Jamilette, Keira and Tyler! It takes a community to pull this off, and all of your support and involvement is much appreciated.
Lastly, I'd like to extend a special thank you to the staff at the Wallkill Public Library for pulling this all together. The programs are in summer, but it is months of planning on their part to make it happen. So, thank you to Christine, Kim and Sarah for your tireless planning and programming with a smile, and to Julie for your artistic eye with fliers and putting it all together in a fantastic bi-weekly newsletter!
It's been our pleasure to spend another summer with you. Remember, we'll be announcing our Summer Reading Challenge winners at the end of the month. So, keep us posted on your reading progress and be sure to fill out those raffle tickets! And the fun doesn't end when summer is done. We have lots of Fall and Winter programs to look forward to as well before we start planning for next summer when "Mysteries Await at Your Library!"
Sincerely, Dan Perkins

| | Art Along the Sidewalk Art Workshop | | |
The Library and Vision of Wallkill are teaming up again for this year's Art Along the Sidewalk contest as part of the annual Summer Reading Program. Art Along the Sidewalk allows children and adults to paint a design on a plastic 18x24 "lawn" sign. Use your imagination with the Summer Reading Program's theme of "Unearth a Story." The artwork will be judged at Weekend of Wallkill and prizes awarded. Then the signs will be placed along roadways in the Hamlet for the month of October for everyone to enjoy.
Additional contest and entry information is available at the library. All artwork must be submitted by September 8th. Contest entry fee is $5. We hope you'll help Unearth some Stories and help Color Our Hamlet!
| | Adult Summer Reading Program | | |
It's not too late to participate in our Adult Summer Reading Program! You have two weeks left to read a book, e-book, or magazine, listen to an audiobook, or attend a program at the library. Each time you do, we will give you a chance to win one of our amazing adult summer reading prizes. Prizes include $50 gift cards to a number of local businesses (Beck’s, Dos Amigos II, The Gardiner Collective, Hannaford, Hudson Valley Chocolates, Wallkill Greenhouse, and Wright’s Farm) plus a complete 9-volume collection of the Outlander novels.
Ask for tickets when you return your library materials or attend a program. The more books you read or listen to, and the more programs you attend, the greater your chances are to win. You can continue to enter tickets through August 31. Adult summer reading is for readers ages 18+. Winners will be announced in early September. Good luck and keep on reading!

August's Adult Book Club Selection
We'll be discussing The Instrumentalist by Harriet Constable on Tuesday, August 18 at 3:45 PM.
Venice. 1704. In this city of glittering splendour, desperation and destitution are never far away. At the Ospedale della Pietà, abandoned orphan girls are posted every through a tiny gap in the wall every day.
Eight-year-old Anna Maria is just one of the three hundred girls growing up within the Pietà's walls – but she already knows she is different. Obsessive and gifted, she is on a mission to become Venice’s greatest violinist and composer, and in her remarkable world of colour and sound, it seems like nothing with stop her.
But the odds are stacked against an orphan girl – so when the maestro selects her as his star pupil, Anna Maria knows she must do everything in power to please this difficult, brilliant man. But as Anna Maria’s star rises, threatening to eclipse that of her mentor, the dream she has so single-mindedly pursued is thrown into peril…
From the jewelled palaces of Venice to its mud-licked canals, this is a story of one woman’s irrepressible ambition and rise to the top, of loss and triumph, and of who we choose to remember and leave behind on the path to success.

September's Adult Book Club Selection
We'll be discussing Remarkably Bright Creatures by Shelby Van Pelt on Tuesday, September 14 at 3:45 PM.
After Tova Sullivan's husband died, she began working the night shift at the Sowell Bay Aquarium, mopping floors and tidying up. Keeping busy has always helped her cope, which she's been doing since her eighteen-year-old son, Erik, mysteriously vanished on a boat in Puget Sound over thirty years ago.
Tova becomes acquainted with curmudgeonly Marcellus, a giant Pacific octopus living at the aquarium. Marcellus knows more than anyone can imagine but wouldn't dream of lifting one of his eight arms for his human captors--until he forms a remarkable friendship with Tova.
Ever the detective, Marcellus deduces what happened the night Tova's son disappeared. And now Marcellus must use every trick his old invertebrate body can muster to unearth the truth for her before it's too late.
Shelby Van Pelt's debut novel is a gentle reminder that sometimes taking a hard look at the past can help uncover a future that once felt impossible.

| | Saturday Morning Book Club | | | |
August's Saturday Book Club selection is...
... The Four Winds by Kristin Hannah. We'll be discussing it on Saturday, August 22 at 10:30 AM.
Texas, 1934. Millions are out of work and a drought has broken the Great Plains. Farmers are fighting to keep their land and their livelihoods as the crops are failing, the water is drying up, and dust threatens to bury them all. One of the darkest periods of the Great Depression, the Dust Bowl era, has arrived with a vengeance.
In this uncertain and dangerous time, Elsa Martinelli—like so many of her neighbors—must make an agonizing choice: fight for the land she loves or go west, to California, in search of a better life. The Four Winds is an indelible portrait of America and the American Dream, as seen through the eyes of one indomitable woman whose courage and sacrifice will come to define a generation.

When Greta stumbles upon a mysterious coffee shop serving a magical brew, she wishes for the perfect life in those past Maple Gold commercials. Next thing she knows, Greta wakes in the idyllic make-believe town of Mapleville, where the sun always shines and the aroma of freshly brewed coffee and second chances fill the air. Given the opportunity to live the life she dreamed, Greta is determined to rewrite her own script. But can life ever be like a coffee commercial? And what will happen when Greta has to choose between perfection and real life, with no turning back?
