Milkweed for Monarchs!!!

We have Monarchs in the nursery now!!!

Monarchs have been reduced in numbers in the previous years, the cause is blamed on many things but really the cause is unknown. We are thrilled to see a Monarch two weeks ago and now another today! Hopefully they will be here to lay eggs on our Milkweed plants! We have a wide variety of NATIVE Milkweed plants in the nursery from Asclepias incarnata or Swamp Milkweed which grows large and can tolerate shade and moisture. Also we have the NJ Native Asclepias incarnata ssp. Pulchra which is a variety of Swamp Milkweed. Of course we have Common Milkweed (Asclepias syriaca) which can live in sun or shade and also is very tolerant of soil types and conditions, and then Butterfly Weed (Asclepias tuberosa) which has orange flowers and grows smaller and needs hot sunny dry locations.

All of these native Milkweeds will attract Monarchs and they will lay their eggs on the plants and their caterpillars will emerge and eat the foliage. Interestingly, the foliage is mildly toxic and Monarchs as a result are also toxic for predators to eat, which is why it's so crucial to their survival, and they are adapted fully to it and only reproduce on Milkweeds and close Milkweed related species!
