Portland Museum of Art presents David Driskell: Icons of Nature and History, through September 12. David Driskell (1938–2020) created many of the works on display during his time in Maine, the period critical to his legacy and influence. “When the indomitable human spirit rises above the chaos of violence, hunger and pain and soars to a heightened relief through the making of art, we are classless and raceless so long as we create the spiritual vision. As an artist of African ancestry, I have had to learn to live with racism, sexism and all of the prejudices. I often find refuge and, indeed, solace in the creative process. In the quiet of my small studio nestled in the majestic pines and white birches in Maine, two worlds merge in my work, one of sight, the other of vision." Viewers have the opportunity to immerse themselves in his art and leave with residual knowledge left behind by his genius. The work spans over the course of seven decades and was created at several home-bases across the United States – places where Driskell worked, found solace, and attended college, including Howard University, contributing greatly to one of the country's most esteemed, historically Black universities. The exhibition highlights his steadfast "commitment to a symbolic form that elevates the mind and the spirit above that which exists in the physical world: these are Driskell's icons." Portland Museum of Art is located at 7 Congress Street, Portland, Maine. PMA is open Wednesday – Sunday from 10 a.m. – 6 p.m., offering free admission on Fridays until 8 p.m. Reservations are no longer required. In addition to the exhibition, Indigo Arts Alliance will hold "Driskell's Legacy and the Land: Re-Contextualizing Environmental Justice" from 6–7:30 p.m. in-person, in the Bernard Osher Foundation Auditorium on July 28. Registration for the free event is required. For more information, visit portlandmuseum.org.

Jim Broussard and Kevin Cyr at Alden Gallery
in Provincetown, Massachusetts, July 9 – 22
|
|
Kevin Cyr, Fremont, oil on panel, 16" x 24".

Alden Gallery presents the work of Jim Broussard and Kevin Cyr. Opening July 9, the show runs until July 22. The Provincetown gallery's two-person show captures the essence of the area in Broussard's en plein air landscapes. To Broussard, the subject of his work " is the town itself, which he has portrayed from every angle and during every season in his unique style." After your own stroll down Commercial Street, viewing his paintings in the gallery is sure to add to your experience in town. Then, reminiscence on travel, time and New England through Cyr's hyper-real oil paintings, including "RVs, vans, Land Rovers, and VW buses, all in a state of disrepair and often marked by graffiti and rust" and other vehicles eternally painted in their most authentic state, especially distinctive to New England and Americana as a whole. The Alden Gallery is located at 423 Commercial Street #1, Provincetown, Massachusetts. This summer, the gallery is open daily 11 a.m.–5 p.m., and 6–9 p.m. Wednesday–Saturday through Labor Day. It is free and open to the public. For more information, visit aldengallery.com.
