In this week’s issue, we outline the transformative difference YOU have helped to create for patients, families, and healthcare professionals through support of Golf Fights Cancer's most tangible Priority of Giving: Patient-Facing Capital Improvements.

Patient-Facing Capital Improvements

In the early days of Golf Fights Cancer, the founders and their supporters sought out underfunded critical needs in the cancer community with the intention to make an immediate, positive impact on the lives of patients and their families. What the group learned in 2004 remains true today; It is essential that patients and their families are provided with a peaceful, healing, and high quality environment for their care as they navigate, what for many, is the most difficult time in their lives.

Since inception, Golf Fights Cancer has allocated more than $1 Million for Patient-Facing Capital Improvements, renovating treatment areas and funding the acquisition of medical equipment with the goal of improving the treatment and recovery experience. A few examples of our investments include:

  • Providing a much-needed enhancement to the pediatric pre-op space at Mass Eye & Ear with murals, technology, toys, and furniture

Our most recent investment of transformational impact was just unveiled at Hasbro Children's Hospital in Providence, RI. Because of the generosity of so many in 2020 and 2021, GFC was able to provide a $200,000 grant to the 'Every Child, Every Day Campaign' for the renovation and modernization of the hospital's Pediatric Oncology Unit.

This renovation included ten patient rooms, a central workstation, and much-needed upgrades including fresh color palettes and finishes, enhanced lighting, and flooring throughout.

The result? A highly improved healing space where advanced medical treatment meets the comforts of home for kids who spend nearly 3,000 nights a year at Hasbro's Children's Hospital.

Ted Fischer, longtime Team GFC Boston Marathoner, Cheryl McGuire, Executive Director, and Brian Oates, Chairman and Co-Founder, tour the completed renovations at Hasbro Children's Pediatric Oncology Unit

“As RN’s in the Pediatric Oncology Unit, we treat children who, unfortunately, often have long stays at Hasbro Children’s Hospital. We are grateful to Golf Fights Cancer for supporting much needed renovations to our unit. Families come in and know they’ll receive great care – and now they have a beautiful, modern healing environment during their stay.”

Matt Keiser

Matt will be remembered as a true GFC hero! A devoted husband, father, golf enthusiast, head counsel for the PGA of America, and successful corporate lawyer from Arlington, VA, Matt was diagnosed with an aggressive stage 4 brain cancer in 2020. What followed was a selfless and inspirational mission in support of others impacted by cancer.

Matt used his diagnosis as a rally cry against cancer. Throughout his 6 month battle, Matt raised critical awareness and funding, while inspiring a legion of supporters who continue his legacy of impact.

Matt's passion for sharing his love of the game and his commitment to bringing smiles to the faces of children will live on at Shawn Jenkins Children's Hospital at Medical University of South Carolina where the final touches are being completed on a new putting green for patients and families. Scheduled for completion in August, this space, forever known as the 'Matt Keiser Putting Green,' will be an INCREDIBLE reminder of the 'power of giving back' that Matt so bravely displayed even in his final days. We will always remember how Matt’s contagious enthusiasm touched the lives of cancer patients and their families.
