1. WHAT are antioxidants?
Antioxidants are compounds (vitamins and non-vitamin substances) typically found in foods that neutralize free radicals (highly reactive compounds that are often created by pollution and sunlight). In doing so, antioxidants prevent those free radicals from attaching to and damaging a cell's DNA. Simply put, free radicals can cause cancer and antioxidants can prevent it.

Antioxidants should be worn by
anyone with sensitive skin that burns easily, anyone with red hair and freckles, and anyone with a history of a prior skin cancer

3. WHAT kind of sunscreen should you buy?
Most sunscreens fully block UVB tanning rays, but broad-spectrum
sunscreens
are necessary to block harmful cancer-causing effects of the sun's UVA rays. It can be confusing to chose between chemical and physical/mineral sunblocks. Here's what you need to know:
- Chemical sunscreens tend to be less expensive although they cause more skin reactions and typically block less of the sun's UVA rays than mineral/physical sunscreens. In addition, they cannot be used on children under 6 months old.
- Physical/mineral sunscreens tend to be more expensive and the price generally rises as the concentration of zinc increases. Physical sunblocks typically contain both zinc and titanium dioxide which provide full blockage of the sun's UVA cancer-causing rays and are safe for all skin types including children under 6 months old.
- Additional ingredients are often added to sunscreens to target skin that is mature, dry, oily,acne-prone or plagued by rosacea, Ask your doctor to help you choose the sunscreen that is best for you.

4. WHO needs which sunscreen?
Everyone needs to wear sunscreen
daily. Infants, children and adults with skin allergies, sensitive skin or prior history of skin cancer should choose a physical/mineral sunblock. Dr. Yagoda also notes that everyone needs about 20 minutes of unprotected sun exposure daily for adequate Vitamin D absorption. As a result, she recommends leaving one area of the skin unprotected at a time provided that it receives no more than 20 minutes of unprotected exposure! For example, she recommends leaving your right foot exposed one day, your left foot the next day, your right hand one day, and your left hand the next.
