Building STEPS Snapshot

August 2020
Pictured above: Xaire, a Dunbar High School senior, learns the ins and outs of mechanical engineering and radar systems from a Northrop Grumman professional engineer during the virtual summer session.
Career Exploration
Focusing on career exploration, Building STEPS summer students conducted informational Zoom interviews with business professionals in their area of interest. A win/win all around...students sharpened communication skills, learned about a new career, and volunteers from around the region shared their expertise and professional journeys.
A Very Special Delivery For Our College Grads
Many of our college students completed their final semester online and missed out on a proper graduation ceremony, so we decided to spread some celebration cheer of our own. We hand delivered congratulatory gift bags! We are so proud of our college graduates and their dedication to their own college and career success.

Volunteer Spotlight
"I wanted to do something to give back to the community, and Building STEPS looked like a local organization with great goals and a well thought out game plan. I wasn’t sure if I could accomplish much as a volunteer, but the students’ increasing confidence over several weeks of math lessons really sold me on the program’s effectiveness. Their desire to learn and improve is apparent, and I enjoy helping them reach their potential."

Doing Our Part
Black Business Month was launched in 2004 to “drive the policy agenda affecting the 2.6 million African-American businesses.” Black business owners account for about 10 percent of U.S. businesses and about 30 percent of all minority-owned businesses. Through the end of August and beyond, join us in supporting Building STEPS alumni and their Black-owned businesses.

Lead By Example. Lead With Your Heart.
This holiday season forego the fruitcakes, the coffee mugs or the tins of popcorn. Show your clients and customers, family and friends what the holiday spirit is truly about-love, compassion and helping others. Lead by example by giving the gift of a college education. Donate in a client's, family member's or friend's name and change a life in their honor. Details to come in the September newsletter.

We equip our city's brightest students with the tools to
propel them to college and career success.
