Summer Sundays at Brookhaven National Lab
Brookhaven National Lab “delivers discovery science and transformative technology to power and secure the nation’s future” right from our own backyard! Each summer, they offer Summer Sundays, a series of open house events so community members can visit and interact with the lab. This year, Summer Sundays go virtual! After viewing the virtual presentation, viewers will have the opportunity to pose questions to a panel of scientists (viewers are encouraged to submit their questions in advance).

The first online event is offered tomorrow, Sunday, August 16, at 3:30 p.m. The topic is National Synchrotron Light Source II (NSLS-II). You will get an up-close look at the “beamlines” where scientists use ultrabright x-ray light to see the atomic structure of batteries, proteins, and more. This enables research on fundamental biological questions.

Let it Out in Iceland! Travel
The Icelandic Board of Tourism has an innovative idea to help you let off some steam and let out a scream. Called Let It Out, this project invites you to record your scream online as screaming can be “a therapeutic tool and can be effective to release pent-up emotion.” Your scream will be played on speakers installed in some of Iceland’s most remote locations such as the peak of Fasterfjall in Reykjanes Peninsula, Videy Island in Reykjavik, and the Skógafoss waterfall.

In addition to recording your scream, you can learn about Iceland, download a travel brochure in 14 languages, and watch video courses like Pack Warm. Please note: if you need mental health support, it is imperative that you seek professional help.

Visit the MMSCL Facebook page to watch a program by the Savvy Sightseer Jeanne Schnupp. You will virtually travel to Iceland from the comfort of your couch. There are other destinations such as Italy, Scotland, and London as well. Travel to Iceland HERE
Staff Picks: The Omnivore's Dilemma: A Natural History of Four Meals
Samantha recommends The Omnivore's Dilemma: A Natural History of Four Meals by Michael Pollan. Download the ebook on Overdrive HERE

She says “Do you want to know you're actually eating? The book The Omnivore's Dilemma by Michael Pollan will take you inside America's food industry, uncovering the truth and problems with the food we consume. Food turns into a big moral, political, and environmental decision that can impact us and our world. The book talks about the impact of humans' heavy corn consumption, explores the organic food industry, and looks at the farming practices at Polyface Farms. You will find lots of food for thought while reading this book.”

Language Spotlight: Compound Words

Compound words are made when two words join together to make a new word. For example, sun+flower=sunflower. Can you guess these compound words in emoji form?
