Medicaid Applicant Who Began Paying Her Daughter After Two Years of Free Caregiving Receives Penalty Period
E.B. moved in with her daughter, J.W. After E.B. was diagnosed with Lewy body dementia, she needed a constant companion, and J.W. quit her job to care for her mother. After two years, J.W. began paying herself for companion services from her mother's savings. J.W. did not keep track of the services she provided or the days and hours. E.B. eventually moved in to a nursing home, and applied for Medicaid. The state determined that the payment of $69,211.90 for companion services over two years was an uncompensated transfer of assets and assessed a transfer penalty. E. B. appealed. Where’s My New Medicare Card? How to Find Out the Status
To prevent fraud and fight identity theft, the federal government is issuing new cards to all Medicare beneficiaries that will no longer have beneficiaries' Social Security numbers on them. The government began mailing the cards in April 2018 and the new cards should be completely distributed by April 2019. The cards are being mailed in phases based on the state the beneficiary lives in. Michigan is being mailed now and it takes at least one month to finish mailing. If your mailing address is not up to date, visit www.SSA.gov , or go to your local social security office to update it. Click here for more information.
Laurel Stiehl - One of "The Team" Serving Our Families
Laurel has worn many hats in our organization in various client service positions." Laurel has been with the firm when we only had a handful of team members," said David. "And she's grown with us and helped the new team members along. She's great at planning and organizing, from supplies to the team lunches!"
"It's been very fulfilling to work at the firm," said Laurel. "I had worked at more "traditional" law firms. Here our focus is on the client and service and we have some fun along the way! I have been involved in the Valentine flower deliveries we do each year to our nursing home families. It's a lot of organizing and planning to deliver over 100 bouquets. I love that we take the time to bring joy to these families." "We couldn't do it without her," added David. If you've had the pleasure of meeting Laurel, please click here to send her a note.
