This summer, our Proctor Terrace Elementary Camp was intentionally designed to support kids with diverse abilities and learning styles. One of those Campers, Romeo, is mostly nonverbal and initially had a difficult time settling into Camp.
One day, Romeo noticed an empty whiteboard in the corner of the room. His eyes lit up as he pointed toward it, eager to draw. To everyone's surprise, Romeo began drawing musical notes, then picked up a drum and started playing. Before long, other Campers became curious and began asking Team Members how to read music and play instruments themselves.
Inspired by Romeo's interest, Team Members quickly expanded access to music activities and introduced a variety of instruments for Campers to explore—showing that one kid can introduce a whole group to new things.
