Neighbor Brigade
Update August 7, 2020
Neighbor Brigade Supporter

Amidst quite the unusual summer for everyone, we hope that you and your loved ones find yourselves managing as well as can be expected. Finding beauty in humble places may just be our united superpower after this year of extreme challenges.

Below you will see uplifting stories and updates that we would like to share with you about our continued service to our local communities throughout the COVID-19 pandemic. We are indebted to our Chapter Leaders who have initiated so many new and meaningful relationships which support community-wide efforts to provide essential food and supplies to those in need. We are also in awe of our 454 new volunteers that have joined our organization since March of this year, who together with our more seasoned volunteers, have completed over 2,000 volunteer opportunities to help their communities. There is no doubt that together we are stronger.

As an organization we continue to have the dual priority of supporting those affected by the COVID-19 crisis as well as assuring that diversity, equity and inclusion continue to be a priority in all that we do. Some recent steps we have taken include applying for grant funding for new DEI initiatives, making more purchases from black owned businesses, and proactively pursuing new chapter partnerships in communities that are predominantly composed of people of color. You, our supporters, inspire us, so please feel free to share with us any ideas or steps you have personally taken or actions your workplace has taken to close the equity gap in our country. There is still so much more to do and learn; what is important is that we don't stop trying.

Sincerely,

Polly Mendoza
Executive Director

The Acton-Boxborough Neighbor Brigade was the recipient of the William L. Ryan Community Service Award given at the graduation ceremonies of the Acton-Boxborough Regional High School in late June. The Acton-Boxborough Chapter is led by Kathleen Surdan and Nora McMillan, two inspirational leaders that couldn't be more deserving of such accolades. In March, they swiftly collaborated with the Food Services Dept. (co-recipients of the award), to both manage on-site distribution as well as at-home deliveries of breakfasts and lunches for any food insecure households in the community. Today, they continue to do grocery shopping for immunocompromised residents, provide ride shares for residents in need of attending critical appointments, and help distribute weekly meals and food from local food pantries and places of worship. Since March they have completed over 500 volunteer tasks and their volunteer pool has increased from 60 to over 160! Kathleen and Nora we thank you for embodying Pam's vision and mission in such a beautiful way.
Welcome New Board Member
Ababa Abiem
We proudly welcome Ababa Abiem to our Board of Directors. Ababa was born in Saudi Arabia and grew up in Watertown, MA. She received her masters in Social Work from Boston College and currently works at Boston Medical Center. In her spare time she serves a youth leader in her church and also serves on the Board of Directors for South Sudanese Enrichment for families. Ababa is no stranger to Neighbor Brigade; she was our year-long Program Director in 2018 as part of a grant funded project from the Middlesex Savings Charitable Foundation to focus on diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives with a particular focus on our client and volunteer outreach strategies.
Welcome New Board Member
Susan Green
We proudly welcome Susan Green to our Board of Directors. Susan currently serves in the President’s Office as the Executive Director for Trustee and Adviser Relations at Wentworth Institute of Technology in Boston. In her personal life, Susan brought together over 200 members of “Team Eric,” a group dedicated to giving back to the community; supporting several named scholarships, funding school lunch and summer camp experiences for families in need, giving to non-profits - all in memory of her son who passed away at age 25 in October 2018. Susan and her team are committed to “paying it forward” and making an impact in communities by bringing together helping hands and carrying on the giving spirit of Eric.
Our Braintree Chapter is one of the many chapters that has maintained an incredible quantity of service since the COVID-19 pandemic hit in March. All summer long they have continued to provide weekly meals in collaboration with the Braintree Public Schools and twice a week they support the distribution and delivery of food offered by the food pantry at the Marge Crispin Center. The phenomenal leadership by the Braintree Chapter Leaders, Kelly Cobb-Lemire and Kelly Osborne Green, is what has made this incredible level of service possible.
Remembering Jeff Hoyland
We are sad to share that long-time Neighbor Brigade supporter, client and volunteer, Jeff Hoyland of Bedford, MA, passed away peacefully on July 19th after an 11 year battle with throat cancer. For those who attended Pam's Run last year you will remember he was our guest of honor and a photographer at the event. In 2017 he was also part of the debut play written, directed and performed by Acton-Boxborough high school students which highlighted his powerful story as well as the inspirational stories of 3 other Neighbor Brigade clients. Jeff will be missed dearly by many. His family has established a Dollars for Scholars memorial fund for Bedford High students in his honor. For more details click here.
