Summer Update

Dear members and friends,

What a first half of the year! In this edition, you will read about the remarkable results of our annual golf tournament, the official opening of our supervised gym, the upcoming Saturday openings at the centre thanks to the Mirella and Lino Saputo Foundation, and the transformation of our kitchen and community lounge now underway thanks to the generous support of the RBC Barrier Buster Grants Program of the Rick Hansen Foundation . You will also relive great moments of adapted sailing and skiing, with more summer activities on the horizon.

This momentum rests on solid foundations. We have just finalized our strategic plan and our annual report, and we are very proud of the results.

It is in this spirit that I have the great pleasure of introducing Ilan Elbaz, who joins us as Executive Director. Ilan brings deep experience in philanthropy and project management in healthcare, including with McGill University’s Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences and the CIUSSS West-Central Montreal health network. A longtime community builder, he served on the board of the Friendship Circle of Montreal for over a decade and on the NextGen board of the Jewish General Hospital for five years. His Montreal roots run deep, and his vision matches ours: extending recovery and protecting independence well beyond hospital discharge.

Thank you to our members, our donors, and our entire team. The best is yet to come!

Eric Boyer, Founder and President

Golf Tournament 2026

We want to thank you for your heartfelt involvement in our annual golf tournament! Thanks to your support, we were able to raise an impressive $760,888. This incredible show of generosity directly supports the Neuro-Efficiency Foundation's mission: providing rehabilitation, mental health and family support, technical services, and education and advocacy resources to individuals living with neurological injuries. Every dollar raised helps us continue this vital work at our Centre. We would love for you to come visit us and see firsthand the real, meaningful difference your support is making in the lives of our members and their families. You truly are the heart of our community.

Thank you!

Save the date

May 31st 2027, we will be hosting our 5th edition of the N-EFF Golf Tournament taking place at the Club Laval-sur-le-Lac. See you there!

Announcements

Supervised Gym Opening

We are thrilled to announce that our gym is now officially open to our members! Our fully equipped facility features adapted gym equipment designed to accommodate both wheelchair users and non-wheelchair users alike, ensuring that every member can train comfortably and safely regardless of their physical condition. Under the supervision of qualified professionals, members are welcome to come work out at any time during Centre hours.

N-EFF opened on Saturdays

Starting this fall, the Neuro-Efficiency Centre will be open on Saturdays! Extended hours mean more opportunities for our members to access the rehabilitation services, adapted gym equipment, and community support that are so essential to their recovery and wellbeing. This expansion is made possible thanks to the generous support of the Fondation Mirella et Lino Saputo. We are truly grateful.

Lounge Area Improvements

The lounge area of the Centre is getting an exciting makeover, and we can't wait to share it with you! Thanks to the generous support of the RBC Barrier Buster Grants Program of the Rick Hansen Foundation, we will soon be unveiling a brand new, fully adapted kitchen equipped with state-of-the-art technology designed to empower our members with greater independence and comfort. Stay tuned!

N-EFF Activities

Adapted Sailing

This summer, our members had the wonderful opportunity to try out adapted sailing in Pointe-Claire! Members with a wide range of physical conditions were able to take part in an introduction to sailing on the St. Lawrence River, discovering a sport that is as freeing as it is exhilarating. A delicious BBQ capped off a truly memorable day on the water. Events like these remind us of the incredible things our members can achieve, and we look forward to offering more enriching experiences like this in the future.

Skiing

Once again, N-EFF was proud to offer an adapted skiing day to its members at Owl's Head in the Eastern Townships! Whether hitting the slopes for the first time or returning for another season, members of all skill levels were able to enjoy the stunning mountain scenery while pushing their limits in a safe and supportive environment, a perfect example of what's possible when the right adaptations are in place. We even put together a video capturing all the best moments of the day!

Waterskiing Day

The summer fun continued on July 11th, when six of our members hit the water for a fun and refreshing day of waterskiing. Seeing them out there was a highlight of the season!

Annual BBQ

Our annual BBQ on July 9th brought members, staff, and community members together for a delicious summer meal, great company, and good vibes. It's one of our favourite days of the year, and this edition was no exception. Thank you to everyone who joined us!

Technological Advancements

Polylaminin SCI Recovery

Researchers at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro have spent over 25 years developing polylaminin, a molecule derived from placenta protein, that shows early promise in helping nerves regenerate after a spinal cord injury — particularly when administered in the acute phase, within 72 hours of trauma. A small number of patients in early trials regained some degree of movement, and Brazil's health regulator officially authorized the first formal human safety study in January 2026. It's still early days, but it's an exciting area of research worth following.
