Summer Updates from Brookline CDC

Dear friends, neighbors, and supporters,

We hope this message finds you well and enjoying the start of summer. We’re writing with a few important updates from the Brookline Community Development Corporation (BCDC), including a leadership update, exciting events, volunteer opportunities, and ways to support our mission through the Community Investment Tax Credit (CITC) program.

🌟 Leadership Update: Welcoming Dave Cavell as Executive Consultant

Our Executive Director, Gio, is currently on a temporary leave and is expected to return later this summer. In the meantime, the BCDC Board has brought on Dave Cavell as an Executive Consultant to help lead our work during this period.

Many of you may know Dave, a lifelong Brookline resident. Dave has spent much of his career in public service, including serving as an aide to President Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama, Vice President Kamala Harris, Governors Patrick and Healey, and running for Congress in our District in 2020. He brings deep roots in the community and a passion for justice and equity that align closely with BCDC’s mission. Dave will be supporting our team with fundraising, communications, and strategic planning.

🏗️ Summer Highlights and Events

There’s a lot happening at BCDC this summer! We’re continuing our work to strengthen affordable housing and community stability in Brookline. Highlights include:

  • Community Events:
  • Juneteenth Celebration – Thank you to everyone who stopped by our table at the Florida Ruffin Ridley playground!
  • Groundbreakings at 1017 Beacon Street and 154-156 Boylston Street – We were thrilled to celebrate the start of deep energy retrofits, renovations, and sustainability upgrades at our two properties. We believe these green preservation efforts will make us the first CDC in Massachusetts to manage 100% green, cutting edge energy efficient properties. • Our emergency Rental assistance program continues to help residents stay housed and stable. We have raised $300,000 to help people avoid homelessness and increase access to homeownership for low and moderate-income residents of Brookline. This year alone, our Community Organizer LaDina has helped more than a dozen families in Brookline stay in their homes and avoid eviction.

🏦 Major Win: Affordable Housing Refinancing Secured

BCDC recently closed on a major refinancing initiative for our two affordable housing properties (1017 Beacon Street and 154-156 Boylston Street) in partnership with Rockland Trust Bank.

This refinancing secures affordability for residents at both sites for at least the next 20 years, while also establishing a $1 million replacement reserve to cover future capital needs. This reserve was thoughtfully coordinated with existing public grant funding to ensure the long-term health and sustainability of the buildings, and peace of mind for the families who call them home.

💸 Double Your Impact with the CITC Program

One of the most effective ways to support BCDC is through the Community Investment Tax Credit (CITC) program. This state program offers a 50% Massachusetts tax credit for donations of $1,000 or more to BCDC by individuals, businesses, and non-profits, meaning your support goes twice as far in helping us build and preserve affordable housing in Brookline.

To learn more or make a contribution, check out our CITC Fact Sheet (PDF).

Thank you, as always, for being part of this work. Your support whether as a neighbor, donor, or volunteer is what makes progress possible. We look forward to seeing many of you this week and hearing your ideas for how we can continue to build a more inclusive Brookline together.
