Summer Updates from Charlotte Lab School
Dear Lab Families,

We hope that you are enjoying your summer and finding plenty of time to relax and spend time with your families. We have been busy closing out the 2018-2019 year and getting ready for 2019-2020 -- our fifth year!

Please take a look at the upcoming events, deadlines, and activities below. And, have a wonderful few weeks ahead! We will be in touch again in early August with a list of new faculty, teaching assignments, more school-wide updates, after school information, and details for back-to-school.

Sincerely,

Dr. Mary Moss
Executive Director
NEWS AND UPDATES
August 1 is the last chance to order your EduKit!
All EduKit orders must be placed by August 1 and will be delivered to your home before school begins for a small fee. Your child's supply kit will include the exact teacher requested supplies. Visit the Edukit website and search for Charlotte Lab School (be sure to choose your child's grade level for next year) to order. Please consider donating a supply kit for a Lab friend in need. Select the kit you would like to donate and at checkout in the "Name" field, write "Scholarship Kit."

If you choose to purchase school supplies on your own, please bring them to the Meet the Teacher night in August (dates will be published over the summer). View the lists for grades Lower School (K-5) and Middle School (6-8).

If you need financial assistance for school supplies, please email financialaid@charlottelabschool.org as soon as possible.

Immunizations for 7th Graders
North Carolina requires vaccine records to be updated for students entering the 7th grade. Before your child entered Kindergarten, he or she most likely received all required immunizations except for the Tdap booster and Meningococcal conjugate. If your student has had a well check this year, they may have already received the needed vaccinations. The state requires us to have an updated copy of immunization records for students entering the 7th grade. You will have 30 calendar days from the first day of school to provide the required up-to-date immunization record for your child. Vaccination requirements for 7th-grade-age children can be found here.
Summer Reading List and #LABSUMMERCHALLENGE
We are excited to share our Summer Reading List and #LabSummerChallenge. This Lab tradition aims to encourage students to continue to nurture their joy of learning, designing, exploring, and creating all summer long.

Lower School List: Aside from reading the 1-2 required books, which will be used to support advisory activities early in the year, there are no grades or due dates for this challenge. We're excited for this chance to see what our kids can do and how they can inspire us and each other! Post photos and videos on FB/Instagram/Twitter with #LabSummerChallenge.

Middle School List: Required books will be used to launch advisory in the fall. Additionally, students will choose two or more books from a list of high-interest texts to keep them engaged and reading all summer. Students will keep a reading log so teachers can see their selections and progress and complete a written reflection of their thoughts about their chosen texts. This is due the first day of school.

Two Great Ways to Support Lab Classrooms!
It may be summer vacation, but Lab teachers are already busy preparing for the upcoming school year. As they make plans for their classrooms, one of the biggest challenges teachers face is figuring out how to afford all the materials and resources they want and need for their students. Please consider making a donation in one of the following ways:

  • Purchase and donate items from the Charlotte Lab School Wishlist. This wishlist contains items that teachers need beyond their classroom budget and regular student supplies. Many items are under $10, but make a big difference to the learning environment!

  • Help fund teacher projects by making a donation on DonorsChoose.org. Ms. Winnestaffer, our amazing first grade ELA teacher, just posted her first project - mBots for a Maker Lab. By donating to this project, you can help give Lab students 6 new mBots for engaging coding technology projects in our Maker Space!

Teachers will continue to update the wishlist and post projects on DonorsChoose throughout the summer, so please continue to check back for more opportunities to give. You can view all Lower School projects here and all Middle School projects here. Thank you so much for your generosity and support!
Stayin' Cool with Summer Meals
Please make note of that Charlotte Mecklenburg Schools offers FREE breakfast and lunch to kids from ages 1-18 through their Summer Meals program. No registration, sign up, or documentation needed. View locations, schedules, and menus here.
