State Summer Games Recap

The 2023 State Summer Games were held May 19-21 in Albuquerque. Congratulations to all Special Olympics athletes and Unified partners who competed! Read the full recap and view photos on Facebook linked below.


Four Corners Invitational

The 2023 FCI statewide competition will be held August 18-19 in Farmington. Special Olympics athletes are training to compete in golf, swimming, and Unified softball.

Thoughts from Randy: Worth Waiting For


Special Olympics athletes are often very good teachers. They have helped me see more clearly not only the value of an accomplishment, but the value of having to wait for it. Not easy in a day when wanting success and wanting it NOW is prevalent.


Today I am sharing a photo that was taken at the Opening Ceremonies of our recent State Summer Games. This athlete was chosen to recite the Special Olympics oath in Spanish. Although nonverbal, in order to accomplish the task, he pressed a large button on his tray that played a recording into the microphone of the oath that his brother had prerecorded.


It isn’t easy to perform a challenging task that takes more time than expected, especially in front of a couple thousand people. However, the longer it took this young man to place his hand onto that button, I could sense that we shared in his determination. As we waited for him to accomplish his task – none of us gave up on his ability to hit that button – and more importantly, neither did he...

State Summer Games Recap


Special Olympics New Mexico athletes had an awesome time at the 2023 State Summer Games! More than 750 athletes from across the state met in Albuquerque to compete in athletics (track & field), bocce, Unified flag football, softball throw, skills events, and Unified volleyball May 19-21. Congratulations to all Special Olympics athletes on an incredible weekend of competition! Thank you to each of our sponsors, venues, volunteers, coaches, Unified partners, families and supporters for making this year's State Summer Games a success! Multi-Sport Clinic & Athlete Leadership Training

Special Olympics New Mexico held a Multi-Sport Certification Clinic and Athlete Leadership Training June 2-4. Coaches were able to choose up to 3 sports to certify in, and 54 coaches were certified over the course of 3 days. 7 sports were offered, including bowling with USBC and USA coaches clinician Vinner Brooks, Volleyball with UNM Assistant VB coach April Sanchez, swimming with instructor and coach Ryan with Swim Labs, Softball with former UNM intercollegiate softball player Karen Pace, Basketball with La Cueva girls basketball coach Marisa Cogan and Track and Field with La Cueva track and field coach Jim Ciccarello. Coaches also certified in our newest sport - Cornhole! Additionally, 7 Special Olympics athletes completed the introductory Athlete Leadership training. Congratulations, athletes!


Thank you to all the coaches who took the time to attend the trainings and become even better coaches for their athletes. 

Explore Wellness Program


Special Olympics NM is excited to announce our Explore Wellness program designed to introduce athletes and their families to local fitness, health and wellness partners and resources in our community. We are encouraging athletes and their families to get and stay healthy by utilizing these resources and activities in your healthy lifestyle. Activities will include yoga, outdoor exercising, fitness classes, nutrition and cooking classes and more!

The 2023 Four Corners Invitational will be held August 18-19 in Farmington. Special Olympics athletes from across the state will travel to the four corners area to compete in golf, Unified softball, swimming, and skills events.
