Hello

This week we start into our final month of the Summer Season. It goes by faster each year!

This week's bag features some cooler season favorites, including beets, carrots, broccoli, and even concord grapes.

Above is a photo from years back when we did a lot of cooking classes. Beets had always been a puzzle to many customers. We used to host an event called Beet Beet Revolution at the Grovewood Tavern. One of the favorite dishes was a cold version of borsch - a traditional Eastern European beet stew. Borsch takes on many shapes and flavors depending on where it is from; this version, was a Lithuanian version called Saltibarsciai. Here's the recipe.

In this week's Newsletter

  • Oktoberfest - our farm kitchen is busy cranking out promotional flavors for the week.
  • Spinach - first of our "winter crops," coming a tad early
  • Fall Flavors back in Stock - Apple Cider, Pumpkin Bread, and Apple Pie

Thanks, and cheers to another tasty week!

Trevor

Oktoberfest

Exclusive flavors this week, celebrating traditional German flavors.

Pierogi - hand made with a sour cream based dough using organic local flour

Sold 6 per package. $7.50 per pack or try all 3 for $20.

Riesling Pear and Braised Cabbage - green cabbage braised in white wine with Bartlett pears and fresh mushrooms.

Plum and Quark - roasted Stanley plums and creamy soft cheese

Bavarian Ham and Apple - smoked ham, braised and shredded, then mixed with apples for a sweet and slightly smoky filling

New Sausages

This week we have two new flavors for the week:

Oktoberfest Beer Brats - pork and Market Garden beer in a juicy smoked bratwurst. 4 per package, 1.25#

OCP Currywurst - a traditional German street sausage, the currywurst is a unique treat. Made with pork and emulsified with heavy whipping cream for added protein (bind) and moisture. A fresh (not smoked) sausage.

Soft Pretzel Bread Pudding with Beer Cheese Sauce

We decided to take the perishability of soft pretzels and turn it into an asset...

Chef Jeff came up with a savory bread pudding using homemade soft pretzels and pairing it with a Wooly Pig Beer Cheese Sauce.

Sold in a 9 inch pie tin with 4 oz dipping sauce.

Sauerkraut - $1 off

Whether you are looking to stick with the German theme or just interested in the health benefits of Raw Sauerkraut, it is $1 off this week. Made simply of organic cabbage and pink Himalayan salt.

Spinach

This time of the year our growers are getting their crops planted for winter. The trick is to get enough growth that they are ready to harvest by winter...as they wont' grow really during the short daylight of winter.

One of our most popular "hoop house" crops is spinach. Mike at Busy Bee Organics in Baltic grows some amazing spinach. With the abundant sunshine and heat of September, the first crop has come on early.

We are excited this week to have 8 oz bags of organic, leaf spinach and an Asian Greens Mix available!
