¡Bienvenidas y Gracias!
Big thanks this month to Alicia Nogales. She heard that the Jabon Y Costura Class needed two new sewing machines, and donated the funds to purchase one. If you would like to donate the other one, click the PayPal link below.

Thanks also to Cori Criss, who stopped by the store to donate several beautiful watches. Some lucky buyers will scoop these up!

Friends of Las Hermanas

We are excited to announce that we have formed a US nonprofit, 501c3 organization, called Friends of Las Hermanas. This status will enable you to make tax-deductible contributions to fund our projects. We are in the process of setting up our checking account, and will soon be able to accept cash, checks, or electronic donations via our new PayPal and Venmo accounts. Stay tuned for details!
Mini-Bibliotecas Are Here
What started as a dream has become a reality. We now have six mini-bibliotecas, or little libraries, scattered over the area. Pedro oversaw the installation of the posts, and Wendo attached the structures on top. Big thanks to Wendo for this, as well as for the design, construction, and painting of these little beauties. They are filled with books for children in Spanish, or Spanish and English, at a variety of reading levels. Children can borrow a book read, it, and return it for another one. What a great way to instill a life-long love of reading, paving the way for success in school and in life.

Thank you all for donating books and funds, for your memberships, for bringing jewelry to sell, and for patronizing our store. We couldn’t accomplish this or any other projects without you.

Update on the Troncones Kinder Renovation

Despite a rainy summer season, work has begun on the Troncones Kinder. The current phase is the construction of the bathrooms, a critical need for the school. We received this photo from principal teacher Nayeli. Thanks to everyone who donated, and to La Union president Crecencio Reyes Torres for making it happen.

Our Beloved Pedro Palacio Needs Our Help

Pedro Palacio is a valued ambassador for Las Hermanas de Troncones, along with Dulce Lopez. They work together with Las Hermanas to make sure that our ideas for how to help the women and children of the area align with what their true priorities are. Pedro has helped immensely in the Kermes, as shown in the top two photos, that we have held each November, before Covid. He and Dulce handle distribution and collection of the laptops used by our students. He keeps track of student attendance, and the need for further help or guidance. Pedro has his finger on the pulse of the village, acting as the town crier to get the students registered for the transportation fund. He is unseen by most Hermanas, yet he is a most vital part of our success within the community.

As many of you know, Pedro suffered a serious injury recently, resulting in several broken ribs and possibly a punctured lung. He was transferred to a hospital in Acapulco before returning home to recover. As you can imagine, the medical bills are high, and his wife, Susi needs financial help to pay them. (Susi is shown here with a mattress donated by Jason Hatfield Merritt and Yolanda Palmer of Colchonia Mattress stores.) If you would like to help with these expenses, you may donate to a fund set up via PayPal: https://www.paypal.com/pools/c/8L7JxwzHj4.
If you are in Troncones and aren't able to donate via PayPal, you can drop off your donation at Casa de la Costa (across from Mi Jardin).
Students Love Our Classes, and More Are Being Added
Attendance is steady, and classes are popular. Student Eli Yanez Sanchez, pictured here, says, “I take both the sewing and weaving classes, and I like learning to make things. I didn’t think I had any creativity before I started taking the Las Hermanas workshops!”

We love hearing that our students discover new things about themselves through our offerings.

Hilda Itsel Aley and Kim Kovel have developed a jewelry-making class. They focus on gathering the broken bits from donated jewelry and using them to create new designs… Turning trash into treasure! Read on for an article all about jewelry.

The Power of Jewelry

They say that jewelry brings sparkle to everyday life. Those who shop at our Las Hermanas store discover treasures from all over the world, and the sparkle brings light and life to the people of our villages. When you donate your jewelry to Las Hermanas, you provide a fundraising lifeline. You also create an opportunity for social interaction among our members. We have pop-up sales at our luncheons, and members and restaurant patrons walk away with fun finds while providing donations. Kim Kovel recently organized a jewelry-sorting party at Hacienda Eden, and volunteers including Kim, Jill Edwards, Malury Ordas, Walli Kay Osborn, Alicia Nogales, Joanie Knudson, Anne Marie Lewis, new owner Jess Connor, and the Eden staff participated. Everyone had fun, and got an important task done.

Sometimes the jewelry is missing a part, or is otherwise not able to be sold, but that just provides material for our new jewelry-making class! There have been many requests for such a class, and Hilda and Kim, as mentioned above, accepted the challenge and organized one. So we are getting yet another use from your donated jewelry, and nothing goes to waste.

Every piece of jewelry tells a story. Let your jewelry tell a tale that continues long after you last wore it.

Another Fundraiser for the Las Hermanas Workshops

The students held their second fundraiser on Sunday, July 10, and it was a big success. Their aim was to raise money to support the workshops, providing the materials they need for their projects. Here are some photos from the day.
