Girard 2-Day Workshop
Drawing for the Non-Objective Artist
Monday & Tuesday, June 10-11
9am-4pm
Drawing for the Non-Objective Artist
with Theresa Girard
We are mark makers.
Drawing is our pathway and should be an
important part of any painting.

Fluid movement of geometry and organic marks evoke light, space, and energy. Drawing is directly related to the interior and exterior of any painting. It is a strong medium standing securely on its own form and discipline.

This class will encourage an emphasis on working from both still life and intuitive drawing. It provides a “way to get in” and a way to finish a painting. Several tools and drawing aids and image projection will be featured. Theresa Girard is an accomplished artist and facilitator of “workshops for creative people”.

Location: 3rd Floor Masiello Studio
Class size limit: 16

Fee: $275 member || $375 nonmember

Dyer 3-Day The Figure in Pastels & Oils
Tuesday-Thursday, June 18-20
9am-4pm
The Figure in Pastels & Oils
with Margaret Dyer
This studio workshop is an intense three-day class in which students are taught a traditional pastel or oil painting technique. Margaret teaches a simple step-by-step method. Working with a live model, we will explore drawing, composition, anatomy, proportion, value, color, and pastel application or oil painting method. Emphasis is on developing form using light and shadow. For those wanting to speed up and become less tight in their work, this is an excellent class to take.

Location: 3rd Floor Masiello Studio
Class size limit 18

Fee: $400 member || $500 nonmember
Margaret Dyer has lived in Atlanta, GA, since her family moved from New York in 1960. She attended the Atlanta College of Art at the High Museum of Art and furthered her studies under painters Roman Chatov, Kate Fetterolf, and Jim Richards. Margaret is a Master Pastelist with the Pastel Society of America, Masters Circle in the International Association of Pastel Societies and award-winner in the American Impressionist Society.

Shevlino 3-Day Alla Prima Painting
Tuesday-Thursday, June 25-27
9am-4pm
Alla Prima Still Life and Working From Photos
with David Shevlino
This class is about still life painting and working from photos and we'll paint alla prima (wet into wet). On day one there will be a painting demo, then we’ll set up still life compositions and talk about form, design, value, color, paint application and economy of brushwork. We’ll also spend time working from photos of different subjects and learn how we use our painting knowledge to interpret (rather than copy) photographs.

Students will need to submit photos beforehand for instructor approval.

Location: 3rd Floor Masiello Studio
Class size limit: 17

Fee: $400 member || $500 nonmember

David Shevlino studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts (certificate ’84) and the University of Pennsylvania (BFA ’92). His work has been featured in national publications and he has exhibited his work and taught workshops throughout the U.S and Europe. He has also produced a series of videos and DVDs about his artwork and painting methods.

My exposure to art began as a teenager growing up in NJ near NYC. I began making trips to art museums in NYC when I was 15 and developed a love of traditional figurative painting. As a youth I found myself especially drawn to the old masters. Those early trips to the museum instilled in me a love of craft and a sense of where painting comes from. For most of my artistic career I’ve tried to take what I’ve learned about traditional painting and mold it into something I can call my own, which presently means exploring the place between traditional figurative painting and abstraction.
Caporale 3 1/2-Day Portriature in Oil & Pastel
Monday-Thursday, July 8-11
9:30am-4:30pm
Portraiture in Oil & Pastel
with Wende Caporale
Workshop will begin with a 3-hour Oil Demonstration and will take place Monday afternoon from 2-5 pm.

An intensive period of study providing a foundation of fundamental and advanced information in the method of painting a portrait in oil or pastel. During the workshop, two 3-hour demonstrations from life, in Oil and Pastel, will be given with an explanation of technique and materials. Artists will spend the remaining time working from a model in either Oil or Pastel as Wende guides them through the process with individual critiques with a focus on drawing, values, color, composition and defining the form with an emphasis on the affect of light on form.

Location: 3rd Floor Masiello Studio
Class size limit: 18

Fee: $475 member || $575 nonmember

Wende Caporale’s work has been exhibited in the following museums: The Butler Institute of American Art in Youngstown, OH; Seven Bridges Foundation, Greenwich, CT (permanent collection); the Society of Illustrators Museum of American Illustration, New York, NY; The Hermitage Museum in Norfolk, VA; The Monmouth Museum in Lincroft, NJ and the Hammond Museum in North Salem, NY. Ms. Caporale is an elected member of the following organizations and has participated in their national exhibitions: Allied Artists, Audubon Artists, Hudson Valley Art Association, the Salmagundi Club and the Pastel Society of America in New York where she has achieved the status of Master Pastelist. The list of awards for her work in pastel, oil and sculpture includes the Art Spirit Foundation/Dianne B. Bernhard Gold Medal (2018, 2011) and ASF/DBB Award for Excellence (2018); The Portrait Society of America International Exhibition Certificate of Excellence (2012), and the Allied Artists of America Award for Pastel (2017). Her work has been featured in the following publications: American Art Collector; International Artist; The Artist's Magazine; American Artist, Studios and Workshop Magazine, (published by American Artist magazine); The Pastel Journal; Pastel Artist International; and Portrait Highlights magazines. As president emeritus, Wende serves on the board of the Artists’ Fellowship, Inc., a 159-year-old non-profit aid organization which helps professional artists in emergency situations. Wende teaches at the Katonah Art Center in Mt. Kisco, New York and in week-long workshops at her studio in North Salem, New York.
Girard 3-Day Intuitive Drawing & Painting
Tuesday-Thursday, July 16-18
9am-4pm
Intuitive Drawing & Painting
with Theresa Girard
Using intuition, explore contemporary drawing and painting. Combine physical and contemplative methods in your artwork. Engage the “process” of the painting in the “present” rather than concentrating on the end result. Students will gain knowledge and understanding of spatial structure; arrangement and organization of forms; and the impact of color and rhythm needed to make a work of art complete.

Students will be exposed to a variety of approaches applying abstract techniques and sensibilities to the classic art of painting and work to develop a unique voice.

Topics include: acrylic media, color, composition, value, tools and paint application.

Location: 3rd Floor Masiello Studio.
Class size limit: 16

Fee: $375 member || $475 nonmember

Theresa's work is featured in many galleries throughout the country. She is a nationally sought after facilitator of a variety of artistic "workshops for creative people."

"My desire is that the viewer create their own narrative and develop the story of the painting on their own; similar to a daydream."
Dean 3-Day Paper Relief Printmaking
Tuesday-Thursday, July 16-18
9am-4pm
Paper Relief Monoprint
with Frieda Dean
This monoprinting workshop facilitates the bold use of color and form through the use of hand cut paper and mylar stencils. We will work with several stencil making approaches. (There will be demonstrations and individual support for all of the processes.)

Then surprise yourself as you discover and explore experimental techniques with stencils, brayers, brushes, and inks. Your one-of-a-kind prints will build in complexity with multi-layers of saturated colors and delicate ghost prints.

This workshop will not only give you new print techniques, but you will take home a unique portfolio of vibrant new prints.

Location: Garden Level Print Studio.
Class size limit: 7

Fee: $200 member || $300 nonmember

Frieda Dean: In 2000 Dean was invited to join Krishna Reddy's Color Print Atelier at NYU where she produced a body of color viscosity prints whose imagery is based on organic or blown-ink forms. During this period her work began to show the influence of her study of American Abstract Expressionist paintings and prints. After the tragedy of 9/11, Frieda left her lower Manhattan apartment and studio to return to Augusta, Georgia. She is currently teaching painting and printmaking at the Gertrude Herbert Institute of Art in Augusta.
Green 3-Day Painting the Landscape
Tuesday-Thursday, August 6-8
9am-4pm
Painting the Landscape
with Sam Allerton Green
In this workshop Sam will show students how to capture what it feels like to be in the landscape, rather than simply replicating what we see in life or in a photo. Students will seek to answer one of the most important questions, “Why is it paint?” This is a question so many painters rarely consider, but must in order to truly achieve a strong sense of captivation within a painting. Students will use photos and drawings to create their own original works of art.

Through a series of lectures, demonstrations, painting prompts, and encouraging critiques, students will learn more effective ways to paint alluring landscapes. This workshop will focus specifically on oil painting as a medium but Sam welcomes students to use acrylic paints as well.

Materials: students should bring rags, a variety of brushes and a couple flat edge pallet knives. In addition students should bring a bunch of cheap surfaces to work on. (5-10 at various sizes. Gessoed watercolor paper is a great solution for this).

Location: 3rd Floor Masiello Studio
Medium: Oil or Acrylic
Class Size Limited to 16

Fee: $250 member || $350 nonmember
Sam Allerton Green paints often, both inside and outside. The majority of his work is done plein air, on site, in a single session. This forces him to focus on capturing what it feels like to be there, rather than simply replicating what he sees.

Sam grew up in Providence, and studied painting at the Maryland Institute College of art. He has been an artist in residence at The Creative Alliance at the Patterson in Baltimore, MD, and the Vermont Studio Center in Johnson, VT. He is currently the director of the Rhode Island Watercolor Society in Pawtucket, Rhode Island.
Conary 3-Day Building Form with
Color, Mark, and Value
Tuesday-Thursday, August 13-15
9am-4pm
Building Form with Color, Mark, and Value
with Scott Conary
Using various source materials we will explore and play with the language of painting to find ways to create personal work with presence, weight, form, and space. We will draw, paint, discuss, and critique. All traditional mediums welcome.

Don't miss this opportunity to study with West Coast painter Scott Conary, well known for his evocative still life and landscape subjects.

Location: 3rd Floor Masiello Studio.
Class size limit: 15

Fee: $400 member || $500 nonmember
Scott Conary is a RISD alum (BFA '93) living in Portland, OR with work in collections across the country. A friend and former student of Tom Sgouros, with whom he and Shawn Kenney studied together, we are so happy to have him back by popular demand at the Art Club this summer!

Statement: I want a painting to have a form, a mass, a substance of the essential and mysterious beyond the formal matters of light and color. I want it to resonate with the idea of a place, thing or a history. To this end a painting is largely an act of intuition. The way a mark is made and how it builds the image is itself a response and as important as the final image. This creates a tension between abstract and representation, and leaves room for the viewer to themselves react and participate. This is part of the basic urge to scribble something, to shape the world, and to scrutinize and try to understand that world. This is an old idea of the magic that can be art. This is the painting of my heroes - DeKooning, Degas, Rembrandt, Wyeth.

It is also the intensity and curiosity of being human. We are creatures of the landscape, of flesh, of our own personal and shared histories. However nuanced the final products, these root ideas are the start of my paintings.
FitzSimonds & Obelenus 2-Day Solarplate Print
Tuesday-Wednesday, August 13-14
9:30am-3pm
Solarplate Print
with Carol FitzSimonds and Elena Obelenus

Together in this class we will experiment with methods to create a plate and explore various ways to print them from intaglio, relief, a la poupee’, chine colle’, and/or in combination. From found objects, pencil and ink drawings on vellum, Mylar or plate glass to computer or copier generated transparency films - all these various techniques and more will be covered in the workshop.

Workshop will start with looking at various solar prints and plates with discussion of how these plates/prints were created and printed.

Paciorek 3-Day Color and Composition
Tuesday-Thursday, August 20-22
9am-4pm
Color and Composition
with Nick Paciorek
We will explore the use of color and composition.This workshop is for anyone that works with color in their profession. Painters, sculptor, interior designers, landscape designers, graphic designers etc. We will explore color and how color works in a composition. This is not the same three day work shop as last year.

Location: 3rd Floor Masiello Studio.
Class size limit: 14

Fee: $250 member || $350 nonmember
About Nick: Chicago – the city, its colors, shapes and sounds – shaped young Nick Paciorek's world and brought him where he is today: a renowned artist whose work is seen from coast to coast.

As a teenager, Paciorek spent countless hours at art exhibits. He continually returned to his favorite, an Impressionism collection at a museum in downtown Chicago, impacted by the ability of an artist to control the world on canvas simply through color choice. It was then that Matisse became Paciorek's central influence.

As an artist, Paciorek aligns himself with a new generation of Fauvists. He uses broad strokes of brilliant color for their emotional impact.

Each of his pieces is a celebration of light and color, a vivid interpretation of his subjects. For him, choosing the exact combination of hues for each painting is foremost.

Middendorf 3-Day Workshop in Little Compton
In the Footsteps of Sydney Burleigh
Tuesday-Thursday, August 27-29
9am-4pm
In the Footsteps of Sydney Burleigh
with Frances Middendorf
In the summer, Sydney Burleigh would come down to Little Compton and paint. His famous boat studio ‘Peggotty’ can still be seen at the historical society. We will paint with materials that Sydney Burleigh used: watercolor and gouache over pencil drawings on toned paper.

We can paint in the barn but weather permitting, we will frequent the spots where Burleigh painted - the farm fields, the cows, the beach, the old horse drawn carriages, the barns, and the windmill house.

Be sure to bring: lunch, beverages, portable easel, stool, painting supplies, bug spray, blankets, socks, sun glasses, and umbrella if you like.

There will be livestock of donkeys, horses, and cows -- so if you have allergies, this workshop isn't for you.

Location: Little Compton; exact location to be announced only to those who register.

Class size limit: 20p

This very special workshop is for members only , and is intended for seasoned artists.
A bathroom is available. :)

Frances Middendorf has lived in Florence, has a studio in Umbria, and now resides in Rome and Rhode Island. She teaches drawing at the Rome Art Program in Rome, and recently taught a 3-day workshop at PAC (The Capriccio). Born in New York, Frances attended the Rhode Island School of Design (BFA), School of Visual Arts, NYC (MFA) and the New York Studio School. She is represented by the Denise Bibro Gallery in New York City.

Following a 15 year commercial art career working for clients such as the New York Times, Newsweek and the Vivian Beaumont Theater at Lincoln Center, Frances Middendorf continued her learning at the New York Studio School. She moved to Italy in 1997 to study with Nicolas Carone and decided to stay. Nicolas Carone (1917-2010) was an articulate describer of the teachings and tenants of Hans Hoffman as well as a friend to many Italian painters particularly Giorgio Morandi. By emphasizing “plasticity” or the link between surface tension and three dimensionality (Hoffman’s push-pull), Carone guided Frances’ painting from the narrative to the poetic.

Frances credits her knowledge of drawing to her artist and art collector father and to New York Sculptor/Painter Bruce Gagnier who illuminated Carone’s teachings with his love of art history, anatomy and pictorial movement.

Kevin Gilmore is an interdisciplinary artist, working as a painter, experimental sound composer, and educator. Originally from Rhode Island he spent over a decade exploring the landscapes of Wyoming, Oregon, Italy, and Brooklyn. As an abstract visual artist working with collage, acrylic and oils, the sense of place becomes the subject of his abstract canvases. Gilmore works with sound as a medium, composing experimental soundscapes from field recordings, acousmatics through contact microphones, digital instruments and analogue synthesizers. His teaching philosophy has developed through a similar intuitive process, with experience leading workshops and teaching undergraduate art classes. After starting a family in NYC, Kevin returned to his native state... as Rhode Islanders often do. His interdisciplinary art practice is located close to the sea where he also lives with his wife, two children and his dog.

Gennari 3-Day Alla Prima Portrait —
Pets and Wild Animals
Tuesday-Thursday, Sept 17-19
9am-4pm
Alla Prima Portrait — Pets and Wild Animals
with Jennifer Gennari
Over the three days we will work in an alla prima style to promote an active engagement between the artist, and the canvas. Students will bring images (print or ipad) of the animal they would like to paint and will develop their painting through traditional methods of discovering value and color. The animal selected should be one in which a connection is shared. The connection, through it being a pet or an animal that's always been admired will assist in giving the painting that spark of life we all want to achieve.

Alla prima (also known as “direct painting” or “wet on wet” oil painting) is an Italian term which means “at first”. Using this technique, we will work daily on paintings, starting fresh each day to maintain a true "wet on wet" effect. Using this technique we will discover the energy and life that can be injected into your work.

Location: 3rd Floor Masiello Studio.
Class size limit: 15

Fee: $300 member || $400 nonmember
Jennifer Gennari is a classically trained figurative artist. She graduated in 2005 from Ringling College of Art and Deign and in 2008 left for Italy to study at the Florence Academy of Art where she spent three years abroad studying classical realism under Daniel Graves.
