TOS News

Hello Everyone.

Hope you enjoyed your holiday weekend.   Everyone here at The Open Studio has certainly enjoyed having things slow down a bit.  It was a wild and crazy ride this season with all of our new programs and participants, but great fun and overall, very successful new events.   The Pottery rolled along full to bursting as usual and our Gallery had it's best year ever.  The new Expressive Arts building was home to several instructors who offered a variety of well attended classes.

Englewood Homegrown had an amazing the point that Sam is now working full time running his business and has hired some help.  We have also discovered that he can't do everything that TOS has available so we have a couple of related opportunities for someone who might want to become involved.  That's a delightful example of one small business spinning off more opportunities.

The Real Juice Bar has found themselves with a similar plight...... finding they were doing too much with not enough time to focus on what really matters to them.  They are closing for a month and restructuring the way they do business. See The Real Juice Bar notice below for details and stay tuned for another business opportunity as a result of that change.

I certainly want to mention the Emerging Artisans Program and Backyard Events, which were more fun than anyone expected.  Both those programs are being evaluated for expansion for next year and Backyard Events is planning some activities for the summer for those of us who do stay here.  Thanks to all of you who participated.  If anyone is interested in a business opportunity with TOS or wants to teach a class, please get in touch with our Administrator, Judi Jenkins at  admin

We are open all summer so come join the pottery, take a painting class, or sit out back and enjoy all the beautiful new trees.  The Cecropia is big enough to sit under in just one year.   And it's fruiting like crazy.  Try some.  It's quite a surprise.   Thanks again to all of you who make TOS the amazing place it is.   Evelyn

Summer Art Classes

Watercolor 102
Tuesdays, July 4th, 11th, 18th, and 25th, 9:30AM - 12:30PM
$120 for 4-class series, $35 each individual class

Join Angie Brown for this four week, step by step class - a great follow-up for those who have taken the Watercolor 101 class, for beginners with some experience, or a refresher for those at the intermediate level.

We will briefly review some of the basic beginner washes and techniques, and move right on to more advanced washes and techniques. Next, we will delve a little deeper into composition and color theory. Then, we will take what we have learned and get at least one or two paintings completed together.

If you have started working with watercolor, but aren't sure how to progress, if you've tried it and been frustrated, or you have hit a wall and aren't seeing improvement, this class may be what you need!

Class size is limited, so pre-registration is needed. Once registered, you will receive a supplies list. This class runs year 'round.

Simply Watercolor Workshop
Thursday, June 1st, 1:00PM - 4:30PM; $35

Have you ever wanted to try your hand at watercolor painting but didn't know where to start, or maybe felt intimidated by the medium or being in a large class? This is your opportunity to give it a shot, by joining Angie Brown for this one day, 3-1/2 hour workshop called Simply Watercolor. We start with a brief overview of supplies and tools needed, and practice a few basic painting techniques.

Then we jump right into painting. We will apply what we learned, and end up with a painting to take home that day. All materials are provided and you have a painting to take home. We keep the class size small and fun! There are several options available to paint, such as, a sea turtle, flamingos, fish, and a few different landscapes and sunsets.

At least three people are needed to hold a class. Class size is limited, so pre-registration is needed. In the Expressive Arts Building.
To register, please contact Angie at or 704-754-0145.
