Victoria Mansion Offers Classes with OLLI

Staci Hanscom leads a guided tour of Victoria Mansion for the 2018 Portland History Docents class.

This summer marks Victoria Mansion's first course offering for the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI) at the University of Southern Maine (USM). Director of Education & Public Programs Staci Hanscom and Executive Director Tim Brosnihan will offer a one-time summer workshop, "Victoria Mansion & Its Neighbors," in July, and we're pleased to report that the workshop filled to capacity soon after the course catalogue became available! This workshop will offer an in-depth tour of this amazing residence, as well as a short walking tour in the Mansion neighborhood to discuss “what the Morses saw” during their time in Portland.

This fall, Staci will return to OLLI with Site Manager Michelle Josephson to teach a two-session class, "Beyond the Morses: The People of Victoria Mansion." Keep an eye on OLLI's website for more information!

OLLI at USM is one of Maine's 17 active Senior Colleges and one of 124 OLLIs nation-wide, offering courses, lectures, and workshops to learners ages 50 and over throughout the year. We are delighted to be working with OLLI for the first time, and hope that this is the beginning of a long partnership!

Internship Recap - Guest Column by USM Intern Sylvia

My name is Sylvia Brock and I am a senior art history major at the University of Southern Maine. For the month of June, I have been working as an intern at Victoria Mansion under the guidance of Staci Hanscom, Director of Education & Public Programs, and Siobhan Lindsay, conservator. My first project was to simplify the self-guided tour brochure so that it can be easily translated into other languages. Next, in preparation for the upcoming Victorian Fair in October, I researched Mummy Unwrapping Parties, a popular social event in the Victorian era. Expanding the Century of Change curriculum for high school students is one of the educational goals at Victoria Mansion, so with Staci’s guidance, I created a lesson plan for high schoolers on symbolism. I am currently doing background research so that I can create another lesson plan centered around design eclecticism in the Mansion.

Above: Sylvia's plaster decoration restoration in progress on the hall entrance to the Red Bedroom on the second floor. Blue painter's tape holds the delicate pieces in place while they set.

Two long-term projects that I have been working on are creating an online database for one of the scrapbooks made by the Victoria Society, and reattaching plaster tips to different door frames in the Mansion. The latter of these projects has been challenging at times because there is a box full of these tips in the Mansion's collections storage in the Billiard Room, most of them without any indication regarding which door frame they belong to. So far, I have reattached twenty-four of these pieces. It is especially exciting when I can find the exact spot the piece fell from, because it fits back perfectly like a puzzle piece. Another project that Siobhan taught me how to do is accessioning and cataloging different objects owned by the Mansion into Pastperfect, a software database. I am grateful to have had the opportunity to work with such kind people on a variety of different projects.

Above: Scrapbooks from ca.1951 chronicling Victoria Society activities that Sylvia has been adding to a digital database. Highlights include a "Victoria Mansion Week" exhibition of Victorian material culture, costumed event hostesses, speaker engagements, and honors for a female journalist from Maine. The Victoria Society assumed care of Victoria Mansion in 1943, and the organization's name changed officially to Victoria Mansion in the mid-1990s.

Thank you Sylvia for all of your hard work this June! Keep an eye on our Events page and check out our event announcements below if you'd like to learn more about the Victorian Fair and why Sylvia was researching mummy unwrapping parties...

A Bizarre Victorian Bazaar: An Exposition of Oddities and the Obscure

Saturday, October 7th, 2023 | 10:00am-4:00pm

For the first time since 2017, our outdoor Victorian Fair will return to the Mansion lawn this October, with an "odd" twist! Join us for A Bizarre Victorian Bazaar: An Exposition of Oddities and the Obscure. This one-day fair kicks off the Halloween season with an educational (and entertaining!) take on Victorian folklore, camera trickery, Spiritualism, and more.

Learn about how two girls tricked several newspaper readers into believing they had captured photos of fairies, how purported mediums conducted seances, and why some elite Victorians held mummy unwrapping parties. Have your palm read, create Victorian crafts, and much more! This fair is designed for all ages, with activities and games for kids throughout the day. Plus, live music by the Shank Painters!

Keep an eye on our Events webpage, and our Facebook and Instagram pages, as we announce Bazaar happenings over the next few months, and for info on when tickets will go on sale.

Victoria Mansion will not be running regular tours on October 7th, but the house will be open for event attendees to tour.

Support the Victoria Mansion Annual Fund!

Victoria Mansion relies on the support of our community near and far to help us realize our mission to conserve, maintain, and restore this one-of-a-kind property and share its history with the public. Our mission is put into practice every day, with preservation often happening in the public eye. Ongoing research initiatives help us better represent the Mansion within the context of its period to scholars, students, and our everyday visitors.

Support from our community helps us fund the much-needed care this historic structure requires, allowing us to consult with some of New England's top experts in historic preservation, as well as to bring our history curriculum, A Century of Change, to Maine classrooms at no cost to schools.
When you give to the Annual Fund, 100% of your gift goes directly to support Victoria Mansion, making the greatest possible impact on our educational and curatorial programs, restoration initiatives, and ongoing maintenance—all while allowing us to move the Mansion’s top priorities forward.
We are looking for docents and part-time paid guides to join us for 2023!
