Summer and the months leading up to it can be a tough time of year. Diet talk can permeate conversations, and terms like “summer body” and “bikini body” are used to suggest that certain bodies are more worthy to be seen in the sun. Rather than trying to change your body, try focusing on self-love and acceptance this summer.
Start taking little steps towards body acceptance and positivity by:
- Using affirmations. Try out some of these affirmations and see what works best for you!
- Complimenting yourself. Look in the mirror and tell yourself two things you like about yourself, physically or otherwise.
- Seeking out body positive writers, performers, and "influencers" to follow on social media. Representation matters, and exposure to diverse body types can have a big impact on your personal body image.
- Quieting your inner critic and checking the language you use to talk about yourself. You should be your own best friend. If your inner critic is saying things you wouldn’t say to a friend, rationalize the thoughts and counter with positive affirmations.

Seasonal changes bring more than just differences in temperatures; insects vary season to season, with some species becoming much more active in warmer weather. To protect yourself against bites, avoid bushes, tall grass, and areas with stagnant water. Other preventative measures include: wearing long pants, long-sleeved shirts, socks (tuck your pants into your socks), and hats to cover skin; using bug spray; and checking your skin and scalp for bugs and bug bites.
|
|
Some common symptoms of insect-borne illness are:
|
|
- Skin rash
- Fever
- Chills
- Headache
|
|
- Sore muscles
- Nausea
- Stomach pain
|
|
If you do get an insect bite, be sure to clean it with soap and water. If you experience any of these symptoms, see your doctor.

Did you know that a typical t-shirt has an SPF rating lower than 15? That means you should use sunscreen
in addition
to your protective clothing to ensure UV protection.
Here are some tips for enjoying the sun, while minimizing your risk for UV damage and skin cancer:
- Seek out shade and minimize time in direct sunlight whenever possible.
- Always apply sunscreen of at least SPF 15 before you head outside, even if it doesn’t look too sunny or hot. Don’t forget to reapply! You should use approximately 1 oz of sunscreen (imagine filling a shot glass) every time you apply it.
- Wear protective clothing like long sleeves, hats, and sunglasses.
Get out there and enjoy the summer warmth!
