With thanks to the Redwood City Library Foundation for this article about our Traveling Storytime service:
Traveling Storytime is a heartwarming Redwood City Public Library program where dedicated volunteers, ranging in age from 11 to 85, have read to over 230,000 children. Their mission? To ignite a lifelong love of reading by visiting daycare centers and preschools in Redwood City every week.
Why It Matters: Imagine the joy on those little faces—their smiles lighting up as they listen to enchanting stories. Wendy Winkler, a devoted volunteer with almost a decade of service, describes it as “30 minutes of joy each week.” Children run to hug Wendy after storytime, touched by the magic of books and songs.
The Challenge: Traveling Storytime faced setbacks due to the pandemic. Before COVID, 40-60 volunteers reached 1,000 children weekly. Now, with the program restarting, there are only 10 volunteers, including Wendy. Redwood City Public Library is determined to reinvigorate the program!
