the indigenous leaflet ~ July 2020 ~ safe summer fun

Thank you for continuing to support our small, local business in the arts and thereby all of our independent artists during these extra-special times! We appreciate it now more than ever.

We are lucky to have such polite, accommodating patrons who enthusiastically enjoy handmade arts & crafts!  Eve ryone is readily abiding by our mask-requirement policy, as well as easily practicing social distancing. Extra thanks to those of you who have already visited and hope to see more of all of our fans soon - when you are comfortable. There is plenty of space in  the gallery to safely browse and shop. We frequently change our filters sanitize our counter areas and handled ma terials in between each purchase and sanitize doors, handles, edges of cases, and our handmade goods throughout the day. On the days that are not too warm, we leave our doors open for even more ventilation. Of course, we are rocking our face-masks too! We want you to know we are doing all we can to make indigenous a safe shopping experience for everyone.

We're excited about our first artTILE feature!

indigenous  showcases the handmade works of more that 150 artists, always offering an eclectic collection of artful clay tiles. This is our first year without our major artTILE exhibit, but you can still enjoy a myriad of designs from Emily Ulm, Sarah Wilisch Horn, Nawal Motawi / Charley Harper, John Beasley, Arlene Knaak, Parran Collery, Michael Cohen, John & Lynn Hume, Sue Dix, Michael Cohen, Iris & Bob Jewett, Nancy Hopkins, Romy & Clare, Rick & Tonya Pruckler, Sarah & Thomas Gelsanliter, Greg Hicho, Scott Weaver, Bonnie Mitchell, and Janet Tobler.

For the month of July we are showcasing the handmade ceramic art tiles of one of our favorite dynamic duos - Soozee Van Dyke Woods & Tracy Chamberlain of  Ramona Paloma Tile. Their tile designs are just what we need in these unusual times ~ colorful, sweet, charming, and quirky with imagery that always makes you smile!

Join us for this special feature from Soozee & Tracy ~
"Ramona Paloma Tile are two friends making high-fired ceramic art tile. We laugh a lot, take daily inspiring walks with our dogs and love the adventure of working with clay. We make one tile at time. Each piece is beautifully imperfect and one-of-a-kind. We embrace the notion of seeing "the hand in the work"-our tiles wear this philosophy with enthusiasm.

As if twins separated at birth, Tracy and Soozee have seemed to live parallel lives. Their histories have criss-crossed each others' lives since they were children. The coincidences are remarkable. When they actually met for the first time during a water aerobics class in 1998, the inevitable kinship was decreed - sisters and Tile Twins! Humor, combined with a Nordic kindred spirit and an appreciation for the little things in life, ignites the whimsy and creativity that is Ramona Paloma. Each tile is a mini-piece of art: placed on a mantle, used as a trivet, given to a friend."

Joining the talent at indigenous is our newest fiber artist, Marisa Wilfong! Marisa has refreshed our collection of knitted and crocheted shawls in a variety of sizes, patterns, and designs with some created from the yarn she spun herself. Marisa also shares her colorful, functional, and creative handbags, backpacks, and wallets with us. Each is made with great fabric combinations and meticulous detail and craftsmanship. Marisa's wearable arts are colorful, one-of-a-kind appealing works that will enhance a casual or an elegant ensemble.

"I have a few art media that I enjoy working with, but two of my favorites include fiber and textiles. Since a young girl I have always had a love for yarn, material and thread. I started sewing at a young age as my mother was a seamstress and taught me how to sew my own clothes and from there I picked up on knitting crocheting and embroidery. In the past ten years I have really become fascinated with knitted lace and the beauty of the design and the feel of the finished product."     ~Marisa

Daphne Olive's skill and aesthetic in capturing nature in it's simplest form is just what we love about our new collection of jewelry at indigenous. Cut from stainless steel with sterling silver chains and ear wires, Daphne's designs are lightweight and easy to wear. "The inspiration for my jewelry stems from walks in the woods near home with my daughter, June, and the simple elegance of natural forms."     ~ Daphne

Larry Mack has stocked us with a grand selection of his handmade mixed-media garden arts. Combining the colorful beauty of blown glass with copper and other metals, he creates a fun line of garden stakes, mobiles, wind chimes, rain chains, fairy bells, hanging sculptures and more. PLUS there is a great selection of his cool, "I Saw a Tree" sculptures. Okay, the name isn't so cool, but the pieces are! Each TREE is cut from an interesting vintage saw. These range in price from $75-$120, although occasionally there are smaller and larger versions.

Theresa Kramer
Theresa Kramer
Our talented friend, Theresa Kramer, is making some great, comfy masks using fabrics by Charley Harper. They have a pocket for a filter (not included) and are only $15 each.

We have been receiving a new stock of masks each week as they sell out quickly. If you are interested, feel free to stop in or call us at 513.321.3750 and we can add you to our call list. We'll call you on the day they arrive and can let you know which designs are available and you may purchase by phone if you wish.
