The Downtown Library Makerspace is the place to be this summer! Among other things, kids can learn to sew, crochet and make fun crafts. Little ones are welcome at Camp Early or Little Learners in the Community Room. There are also plenty of chances to learn robotics at our drop-in robotics sessions. Find out all the details on our Summer Learning Challenge page.
Did you know that many children experience summer learning loss also known as the Summer Slide? The Summer Slide disproportionately impacts our most vulnerable communities, especially those in grades K-3rd. In one summer these community members are more likely to slide in both English language and math learning over the summer than gains made during the previous academic year. If you’d like to read more about Summer Slide, we recommend this article.
This is where your Library comes in! Our annual Summer Learning Challenge is a great way to combat Summer Slide. Numerous studies have shown that summer programs at libraries help ensure that school children retain reading and learning skills over the break. The Summer Learning Challenge is underway now through August 31st. To get started, stop by any Redwood City Public Library location to pick up your free book. Return your completed log beginning July 1 electronically or in person and be entered for prizes. Kids and Teens up to 18 years old are entered for a chance to win our $1,000 scholarship.
On Saturday, join us as we celebrate America’s birthday while having fun making crafts. Participants will receive a FREE copy of American Anthem: A Song of Our Nation.
