MOUNTAIN HIGHLIGHT

Check out these tiny little monarch babies! They are voracious eaters!  Thankfully we grow many host plants in our Butterfly Garden as well as at the Living History Farm to keep these little ones happy!

The new greenhouse has allowed us to get a head start on growing vegetable seedlings for the farm, and the squirrels can’t get to them!

Students working in our cafe are fortunate to learn outside of the kitchen, too, and are assisting in multiple ways: with greenhouse plant care, harvesting farm produce, gathering farm fresh eggs at our barn, and using these fresh ingredients in their recipes.

While Roper Mountain is a large and diverse campus, we hope you will discover how we have thoughtfully woven together activities from one area to another. And how it all works together to accomplish our mission to ignite the curiosity of all learners to explore and shape their world.

Come visit Roper Mountain this summer and see what a fascinating place this is, both in the physical amenities available to guests and in how our various programs complement and enhance each other. You and your family will have a wonderful time learning and exploring!

EARTH DAY

Thank you to our partners, Greenville Water, ReWa, SC Farm Bureau, and Greenville County Soil and Water for joining us on Friday, April 19th to celebrate Earth Day!

DID YOU KNOW...

Did you know that we had staff observing the April 8 total solar eclipse all over the United States? When the sky goes dark and temperatures drop, some animals respond in odd or predictable ways. Animals take behavioral cues from nature, so a total or partial eclipse during the middle of the day can signal that it is dawn, twilight or night.

Michael Weeks, RMSC Director, and family enjoyed darkness in the Hill Country of Texas. He reported that the birds were active and sang more during the partial eclipse but continued singing during totality as well.

Thomas Riddle, our Assistant Director, represented Roper Mountain as a guest host on CNN International for the Eclipse Across America special, and heard the first reports from Mexico, including macaw parrots flying back to roost during the eclipse.

Anne Howell, our Nature Exchange manager/instructor, reported from rural Indiana that bats began to fly and birds stopped calling. She also noticed that the winds calmed down.

Donna Frank, our STEM/Planetarium Instructor, reported from Cleveland, Ohio, that birds just before the eclipse got noisy and then quieted during the eclipse.

Jennifer Romatelli, our Outreach Program Coordinator, reported from Vermont that owls started hooting and mosquitoes became more active.

During our 2017 total eclipse here at Roper Mountain, I remember observing a big black and yellow orb-weaving garden spider removing her web, as if it were dawn or dusk. I also remember crickets beginning to call.

We hope all of you had a chance to see how life responds to the dramatic event of a partial or total eclipse.

DONOR SPOTLIGHT

This month, we feature Greenville Water and ReWa, who are sponsors of the Our Water Story exhibit in the Environmental Science Building. These two agencies were on hand for our recent Earth Day celebration during Afternoon Explorations, with a variety of fun, hands-on, educational activities. Without these partners and their generous investment, our Environmental Science Building would not be the amazing place that it is! Thank you, Greenville Water and ReWa, for helping us ignite the natural curiosity of all learners to explore and shape their world!
