Hope-Mongering parent/caregiver support sessions

This month:

Mythbusting Blood Glucose Numbers

BG is a key datapoint in managing T1D, but there are a lot of myths and misunderstandings around what's behind the numbers.

We all want our child's graph to look like rolling hills rather than mountains and canyons, but sometimes that graph can become an obsession. So what happens when the landscape of your kiddo's graph gets rocky? And how much control can we really expect to have?

Join Camp Doc and OHSU pediatric endocrinologist Dr. Linsey Nicol ("Dr. Mocha" at camp) for a research-based conversation on blood sugar, fact and misinformation.

Dr. Nicol will talk about the real physiology behind hyperglycemia (high BG) and hypoglycemia (low BG). What are the long and short-term outcomes of an A1C that's higher than that social media influencer with an A1c of 5.9?

What about low BG? What's going on inside the body when BG drops below 60? What if it's below 60 for a few hours?

Are our notions of diabetes long-term complications outdated? Join us as we dive into the numbers ;-)

About Hope-Mongering:

Each month we recruit an array of key voices to host a series of conversations: parents, young adults who grew up with T1D, health coaches, educators, dietitians, T1D doctors and nurses, and of course the GCC summer camp crew. It's a magic formula for conversation on raising a young person with T1D. We'd love for you to join us and add your voice, or just sit back and listen. Feel free to bring topics or questions.

Camp Cleanup Day is June 7st, 2025!

Each year, on the first Saturday of June, we wake camp up from the long, wet winter.

How it works: we have a list of specific jobs and you sign up for whatever works best for you. There will be everything from washing windows to organizing arts supplies. Everything you need will be ready for you, our esteemed volunteer.

Make sure to wear your work clothes and bring your can-do attitude.

We'll start at 9am sharp and work until about noon. Water, snacks and lunch are provided!

See the job list and sign up here!

B.U.L.L Session Events: one of GCC's biggest funding sources for more than 20 years

You may not know it, but GCC is part of a group of non-profits serving vulnerable kids that together leverage our resources to put on unique fundraising events all year long--all guided by the talented Peter Jacobson's Sports events team.

This is the time of year where we're looking for donated items for the beautiful Dinner & Auction event, held September 27, 2025 at the Hyatt Regency Portland Convention Center.

If you're part of a business or organization with something exciting to share, or if you have a beach house or mountain cabin, or if you have clever ideas for silent and live auction packages, please let us know. You can also attend B.U.L.L. Session events to support GCC and other charities.

Learn more about the B.U.L.L Session International Charity Events here, and watch the video below to see what it's all about.
