CHAMBER UPDATES | JULY 28, 2022

Members-
Many of you may not know that my step-father was a police officer for 30 years. He earned his way up as a lieutenant in a suburb of Chicago. He was a WWII veteran, flew in the naval air force during the Korean War and was one tough guy. But he had a soft side too. One time during college I was in our attic and mis-stepped off one of the joists, slamming to the floor of our living room with a THUD! The tiles could not be matched and the entire ceiling had to be replaced. I remember Pop's first concern was me and not the ceiling. He didn't yell or scream at me for taking the wrong step, nor did he say, "Well, you'll have to pay for it to be replaced." There was a genuine concern about my well-being and care about the scrapes and bruises that came as a result of my crash to the floor.
We often look at our parents differently after we've become adults. They suddenly (or not so suddenly) become wiser than we remembered them as a kid, right? Those lessons that our parents try to teach us in our teens, we often learn the hard way multiple times and generally not until we're in our 30's or 40's. By the time I was 35, both Pop and my mom had passed away from forms of cancer and I didn't get to tell them how smart they actually were. My three kids didn't get to know this set of grandparents and had to settle for stories of my childhood and young adulthood.
I guess part of my reason for sharing this story is that policemen and firemen (first responders) have families and those family members have to deal with odd hours, shift changes, last minute call ins and the stress associated with wondering if they are putting their life on the line during the time that they are on duty; I experienced that as a kid growing up. Families also get to see those men and women as ordinary people who have feelings and lives outside their work.
This year, the Colerain Chamber will again host the Police & Fire appreciation breakfast on September 9th. Three of our fire fighters are receiving an international award for valor for a water rescue on the Miami River. This is an opportunity for our chamber and business members to step up and say thank you to those that serve our community. If you have an interest in sponsoring the event, please let me know. Otherwise, we welcome you to this recognition ceremony with information below. Additionally, Police Chief Denney will be retiring from the force at the end of the month of August; details of a community celebration of that retirement are included below as well.
Support. Connect. Celebrate. We can and SHOULD be doing these things in our lives each day and week. I hope that you can do so through the various events and opportunities that the Colerain Chamber presents.
See you soon.
Dave
