Whether you’ve never farmed before, you seek advanced training, or you’re transitioning to sustainable agriculture, take advantage of UM CRAFT Field Days, Workshops and Virtual Events throughout the year with topics focusing on the core themes of soils, plants, animals, and people. UM CRAFT events provide prospective and current farmers exposure to the diversity of farms in the region, and is built on the practice of farmer-to-farmer training.

Julie and Jenny!

Julie Tackett has joined us as our On Farm Program Director. Julie is looking forward to working alongside the hard working educators and staff in delivering a curriculum that is inclusive, exciting, and hands-on for all participants.

Jenny Addison joined the team in May as the new Communications and Events Manager. As an advocate for urban agriculture, Jenny is deeply connected to the mission of the Learning Center and is excited to broaden communication efforts and expand our audiences.

Our last sessions of Farm Camps wound up this month. Campers were out every day learning, creating and experiencing nature's beauty and bounty. Campers made green bean refrigerator pickles, tended the goats and pigs, learned how to identify and safely forage for black raspberries, and explored the creek's diverse ecosystem. Our Teen Campers spent a week bonding and built a log labyrinth for all to enjoy!

What's Growing at Roots & Wings

Roots & Wings welcomed our first volunteers of the year to the farm in May! Disrupted for over 2 years due to the pandemic, we were excited to once again partner with Youthbuild Rockford, a long-time supporter of Roots & Wings and Angelic Organics Learning Center. During their visit we accomplished two main tasks: distributing mulch throughout the farm and turning and organizing our compost pile.

Youthbuild Rockford is one of several programs led by Comprehensive Community Solutions (CCS). Youthbuild Rockford provides academic education for acquiring a high school diploma, vocational skills training culminating with industry recognized credentials, personal case management and trauma informed care supported by a personal development plan, positive peer support, leadership development, job placement and follow up support.
